Oman to participate in WSIS Forum 2014
The Sultanate begins its participation in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2014, taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, during the period from 9th June to 13th June, alongside the participation of several countries from around the world. The Sultanate’s delegation is headed by Dr. Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of Information Technology Authority (ITA), and is being attended by officials from ITA and Oman government institutions.
This year the WSIS Forum discusses the countries achievements of the past 10 years and plans for what will be accomplished beyond 2015 in its aim to build a global information society.
The Sultanate will also participate in high-level meetings with officials from various countries to discuss the utilization of the potential of Information and Communications Technology’s (ICT) to serve the development and promote the use of information and knowledge in order to achieve the internationally agreed upon WSIS Action Plan. The Action Plan includes the Millennium Development Goals, the new challenges of the information society at all levels, national, regional and international, and the analysis and assessment progress that has been made towards bridging the digital divide.
During the Forum, the WSIS Project Prizes will be announced and seven projects and initiatives from the Sultanate are competing with other projects from around the world, namely: Sas Programme for Entrepreneurship, NPC Initiative, OCERT, e.oman Strategy, e.Referral System (MOH), Education Portal (MOE), and Central Recruiting (MOCS).
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a high-level meeting of world leaders who are committed to employ the potentials of the ICT digital revolution to serve humanity. The summit aims to build an inclusive information society that targets every individual and develops a community where everyone can develop, access, utilize and share information and knowledge to promote their sustainable development and improve their life.
