The workshop held by Hani Obeid, Senior Advisor and Acting CEO of Zubair Small Enterprises Centre (Zubair SEC) provided students and competitors in the Dar Al Atta’a Big Give competition with insight and guidance on how to best pitch for their fundraising projects and stand out in their volunteering work.

The 3rd Big Give competition 2013 was launched at the beginning of academic year 2012-13 engaging students from various universities and colleges across the Sultanate with the aim to not just raise funds in support of the community needy, but to also provide opportunity for students to acquire skills and experience in serving the community and less fortunate people in the Sultanate. In the past couple of years, competitors have come up with innovative projects to raise funds throughout the year; many of which have proved to achieve great results. In the 1st round 14 teams participated from different universities and colleges and were able to raise RO 19,264 and in the 2nd round 23 teams participated and raised RO 77,437.

Shatha Abbas, Board Member and Head of Events Committee said, “I think this is a great opportunity for the students to be collaborated with Zubair SEC to gain the knowledge they need from experts in the field. The workshop was informative and motivating. We are happy with this collaboration and looking forward to our future collaborations with Zubair SEC. We would also like to thank Bait Al Zubair for sponsoring the venue for the workshop”.

Zubair SEC is one of the initiatives which emanated from The Zubair Corporation’s Social Responsibility strategic vision towards the Omani society. The vision reflects the corporation’s belief in the importance of small enterprises (SEs) in enhancing the national economy and contributing to sustainable socio-economic development. The centre comprises a team of socially engaged and business savvy advisors who put all effort to contribute to leveraging the Omani community through equipping and enabling entrepreneurs and start-ups to grow with their businesses in a sustainable and responsible manner. Since its launch in 2013, Zubair SEC has joined to its membership 70 small businesses and around 100 entrepreneurs from all sectors of the economy to benefit from its services and support.

While Obeid’s main passion and profession is to support community development through enabling and supporting the Small Enterprises sector in the Sultanate of Oman, he is also equally passionate about building the right qualities and skills in the younger generations that will be the custodians of tomorrow’s community.

Commenting on his meeting with Dar Al Atta’a teams Obeid said, “I was truly inspired to be among motivated youth coming together under such a great cause with such a reputable NGO to learn, share and funnel their energies to compete with one another for the good of the Sultanate. Many of these youth who live in the Sultanate keep doing what they are doing out of a sense of purpose or meaning they find in their work. My role is to continue sharing with them whatever I can in simple tips that I have learnt over my years working in both the Americas and the MENA region”.
