The Environment, Health and Safety Division at the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), has recently held a workshop to educate employees of the DMA about the importance of observing the principles of Environment, Health and Safety in offices, such as fire & emergency exits, and coping with emergency cases with the aim of raising employees’ awareness about the environment, health and occupational safety.
During the workshop, Ms. Aysha Abdul Qadir Al Hashmi, from the Environment, Health and Safety Division, reviewed the core principles and values adopted by the DMA towards the implementation of the Environment, Health and Occupational Safety Management System to maintain the health and safety of employees.
“This system is compatible, with the Environment, Health and Occupational Safety System adopted in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi; which requires government entities as well as private organizations to assess the risks posed to various activities, and prepare a comprehensive system for managing all factors relating to the safety and occupational health with a view to minimizing the risks and hazards on employees, and nurturing a safety & healthy working environment. It also comes as part of the DMA’s strategy aimed at developing concepts and applications of the Environment, Health and Occupational Safety standards, and its keenness to educate employees in this field as it has great bearing on leveraging the standards of comprehensive service,” explained Aysha.
“The DMA is keen on diffusing the awareness about the Environment, Health and Occupational Safety standards through intensifying awareness workshops dedicated to the internal system of the Environment, Health and Occupational Safety, and contributing to raising employees’ education about the standards and requirements of the health, safety and environment,” she continued.
The workshop also highlighted the role of the Environment, Health and Occupational Safety Division at the DMA in eliminating the risks, fostering a safe working environment, improving the quality of internal environment, reducing the environmental print through developing green offices program as well as the environmental training program, controlling the consumption of resources in the Department such as paper, curbing carbon dioxide emissions, and improving the response to emergency conditions.
The workshop also reviewed DMA’s environmental and safety policy, roles & responsibilities, and he risk management process as well as a host of other issues including the reporting of impending accidents, emergency management plan, role of employees in complying with the legislations of the environment, health and occupational safety, seeking guidance in respect of all procedures and codes of practice in support of programs of environment, health and occupational safety, taking the initiative in assuming responsibility in matters relating to the environment, health and occupational safety of employees, participating in meetings & training sessions regarding the environment, health and occupational safety, refraining from misusing anything described as adding to the interest of the environment, health and occupational safety, and the instant reporting of the emergence of definitely hazardous conditions within or in the vicinity of the work place.
