DEWA to hold Green Week on 14-20 April

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will hold its first Green Week event to raise awareness onthe rational consumption of electricity and water from 14-20 April.

The inaugural Green Week will coincide with leading environmentally-focused events such as the 16th Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2014), the World Green Economy Summit 2014and the launch of SmarTech Shopper, which targets consumers.

The launch of the Green Week initiative forms part of DEWA’s campaign to spread a culture of sustainability and green solutions among different segments of society. DEWA will organise a series of activities and educational programmes to highlight sustainability solutions and demonstrate the optimal methods of rationalising the consumption of energy resources.

“The main objective of Green Week is to promote a culture of environment sustainability among all members of the community and urge them to take action to protect the environment. The event, to be held annually, will featuremajor environmentally-focused events in Dubai while promoting best green practicesto achieve the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, in addition to creating a sustainable environment that would support long-term economic growth,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of DEWA.

“DEWA will organise a series of community events highlighting issues of sustainability, such as seminars at WETEX and the World Green Economy Summit.There will be a dedicated platform for Green Week activities at WETEX displayinggreen solutions,” Al Tayer added.

“At DEWA, we look at all possible means to raise awareness of conservation, targeting mainly our consumers, not only with the goal ofprotecting the environment and but also providing advice on reducing the consumption of electricity, water and other energy resources. This will benefit the community in the long run.”

The activities for Green Week include a series of social, education and entertainment activities, including workshops, and presentations to raise awareness about the conservation of electricity and water. DEWA will launch the Green Ribbon sustainability pledge campaign to disseminate a culture of conservation. This campaign will raise awareness on best conservation practices. Participants will choose some daily green practices and will pledge to abide by them all year long. This, along with other activities, will support the reduction of electricity and water production, as well as cut down on carbon dioxide emissions.

A number of activities organisedby government bodies, institutions and schools in the UAE, will take place during Green Week at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Al Ittihad Private School in Al Mamzar, Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart University,the Higher Colleges of Technology, Greenwood International School, Dubai Modern Education School, Gulf Buds Private School, Willow Children’s Nursery Dubai, and others will showcase projects highlighting the importance of preserving the natural resources and the environment. Also, Ambassadors of Sustainability,a part of Dubai Municipality, will showcase sustainable solutions and projects. In addition toengineers from DEWA will also give explanationson conservation programmes.

The Green Week activities will move to Mirdif City Centre on Thursday, 17 April, and continue for three days, featuring an art exhibition offering drawings and paintings on rational consumption and sustainability. There will also be graphics onconservation of water and electricity and its social impact. The exhibition is expected to drawa large number ofvisitors.DEWA has also launched a special competition for Green Week over Instragram and other social media sites to send photos related to conservation and sustainability. DEWA will re-publish the best photos through Instragram and the best three photos will win a camera.
