Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) has announced the winners of the tenth Best Consumer Award during SmarTech 2014 exhibition organised in conjunction with Water Energy Technology Exhibition WETEX 2014 from 14-16 April at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Best Consumer Award encourages DEWA’s residential customers to reduce the consumption of electricity and water and implement eco-friendly practices to reduce the use of natural resources required to generate electricity and for a sustainable future, for generations to come.
“DEWA consistently raises awareness about conservation and rational use for electricity and water among the residents of Dubai by conducting awareness campaigns throughout the year to achieve real savings in the consumption of electricity and water in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. This award comes at a time where DEWA is making rapid strides in enhancing a responsible culture within society to conserve natural resources,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD & CEO of DEWA and Founder and Chairman of WETEX.
Al Tayer said that the award is part of DEWA’s efforts to realise the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 which aims to reduce demand for energy by 30% by 2030.
Al Tayer said that the levels of savings in the consumption of water and electricity achieved by the winners ranges from 17-53% for water and 17-56% for electricity, which is a clear indicator of the efficacy of these campaigns in raising awareness across all aspects of society.
“We are proud of the innovative ways in which DEWA’s customers have achieved remarkable savings that exceeded 50% in one year alone. This proves the success of the conservation campaigns led by DEWA and the interaction it generated with customers,” Al Tayer added.
“Energy and natural resources are precious and we should protect and conserve them and only use them sparingly to prevent them being wasted. This is a responsibility for every one of us. The Best Consumer Award motivates DEWA’s customers to limit their consumption of natural resources and further enhance best practices in electricity and water use,” said Amal Koshak, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications, DEWA.
“Thanks to its programmes and awareness initiatives in 2013, DEWA has managed to save 5,902,065kWh of electricity and 33,564,486 gallons of water. The total savings for the last 5 years is over Dhs22.4 million. Encouraged by these results, we remain committed to continuing our efforts to increase environmental awareness and educate society about conservation of electricity and water consumption to reinforce the steps of environmental sustainability in Dubai,” Koshak added.
Koshak said that the parameters of the award were expanded for participants to include Green Bill and electronic payments through DEWA’s website.
DEWA has promoted the best consumer award through a residential campaign where hundreds of homes in different places in Dubai were visited for the same.
The winners expressed their pride to participate in the award, and evaluated the role of DEWA in strengthening the culture of environmental sustainability in Dubai. They said that they were able to achieve all these remarkable savings in the levels of electricity and water consumption through adopting simple positive practices like switching off electric appliances when not in use, using eco-friendly home appliances and monitoring consumption figures through the Consumption Graph feature to compare their monthly consumption levels of electricity and water.
