Dr. Moopen’s Foundation extends its ‘Healing Touch’ initiative to Afghanistan

The ‘Healing Touch” Free Heart Surgery program, a part of its ‘Care Beyond Boundaries’ initiative, will provide free heart saving surgeries to 25 deserving adults and children of Afghanistan, over a period of a year.

Padma Shri Dr. Azad Moopen, Chairman & Managing Director, DM Healthcare made the major charity promise at an Iftar gathering hosted by DM Foundation at The H Hotel in Dubai on Monday, July 29, 2013 in the presence of top ranking officials of Afghan and Indian missions in the UAE.

H.E. Dr. Najibullah Mojadidi, Honourable Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the UAE, H.E. Shri Sanjay Verma, Honourable Consul General of India in Dubai, and H.E. Mr. Atiqullah Atifmal, Honourable Consul General of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Dubai were present at the occasion, along with officials from Ministry of Health (MoH) and Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

H.E. Shri Sanjay Verma has hailed the humanitarian initiative undertaken by Dr. Moopen’s Foundation. H.E. Shri Verma also offered all supports and necessary services to implement the program.

Commenting on the life-saving initiative, H.E. Mr. Atiqullah Atifmal said, “We are extremely happy and grateful to the DM Foundation for this big hearted initiative that helps Afghani heart patients. We hope this project will reach out to many people in need of these surgeries and help provide them a new lease of life.”

“The initiative is a symbol of hope for many underprivileged heart patients in the country. The needy patients will be recommended for the cardiac surgeries based on the seriousness of their condition and financial capacity. We will have a single window system routed through the Consulate General of Afghanistan in Dubai for the process of identifying suitable and needy applicants for the free heart surgeries,” he added.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Azad Moopen said, “We will provide 25 cardiac surgeries over a period of a year, valid from Aug 1 2013, for the deserving Afghani nationals. The needy patients will be chosen with recommendation and reference of the Afghan government. Our goal of is to extend the reach of this ‘Healing Touch’ initiative to more countries in the Asian and African continents, where there is an acute requirement for intervention in the delivery of healthcare to the poor and needy.”

“The selected patients for the cardiac surgery will be provided Indian visa for their travel and treatments at the Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences in Calicut, Kerala. The Heart Center at MIMS, Calicut combines global standard medical expertise in cardiac procedures with cutting-edge technology. The Centre is a state-of-the-art tertiary care center with advanced facilities to provide management of comprehensive adult and pediatric cardiac surgery and care under one roof,” he added.

DM Healthcare is known for its charitable and ‘not for profit’ initiatives under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, routed through the umbrella of Dr. Moopen’s Foundation, which is involved in various health awareness campaigns in line with the ‘Healing Touch’ initiative in the Gulf Countries, India and the Philippines. Now the Foundation is extending the initiative to the suffering patients from Afghanistan. Some of the ongoing activities under the “Healing Touch” initiative include Free Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Programs in India and abroad; “Save the Little Hearts”-Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Program across India, Oman, Africa and Philippines, Standalone Community Dialysis Centers across Kerala in India, Early Diseases Detection Centers (EDDCs) for Cancer & Lifestyle Diseases, Radiation Oncology Centre in the Northern Kerala for reducing travel strains of diseased, Mobile Clinics for Health Screening and Health & Safety Awareness Programs, Subsidized treatments for advanced surgeries through MIMS Charitable Trust, Village Adoption for Healthcare Supports of BPL population through Rural Health Centers, and for Educational & Social Uplifting through ‘Moopen’s Institute for Local Empowerment (MILEs) Program, Healthcare Education and Guidance, etc.
