At a recently-held Telecom Knowledge Series session, du empowered members of the UAE media with in-depth information about mobile networks, focusing in particular on HD Voice technology – that enables significantly better background noise cancellation for calls.
The bi-lingual session was hosted by Marwan BinShakar, Vice President – Mobile Access Network & Operations, du, along with other members of the network team in du. In addition to a special demonstration of HD Voice, topics covered included the structure of a mobile network, how a mobile network works, mobile network key performance indicators and more.
BinShakar said: “A mobile network is something that we all use on a daily basis, but the way in which it works is rarely fully understood. Though our Telecom Knowledge Series, we are able to provide empowering information to attendees, giving them an in-depth understanding of the technologies that are powering the digital evolution we are in the midst of.”
du launched HD Voice on mobile in 2011 to tremendous response from customers – with 200% growth in HD voice traffic in the last 6 months itself– and is the only operator to offer the service at no extra cost! Today, du offers HD voice on both its 3G mobile and fixed line networks. Deployment of HD Voice on du’s 4G LTE network is currently underway.
According to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association*, du is the only mobile network to deploy HD Voice on 3G voice.
Key benefits of HD Voice:
Increased user satisfaction through a better user experience by offering:
· More natural sounding speech
· Making it easier to recognise voices
· Significantly better background noise cancellation
· Making the sounds more comfortable to hear
HD Voice enables high-quality voice calls in mobile networks, and an improved user experience between mobile phones supporting the feature. It is based on a Wide-Band AMR speech compression algorithm, in which the voice bandwidth is doubled (50–7000 Hz) compared to the current narrowband speech codec (300–3400 Hz) without extra radio or transmission requirements. The benefits of clear, high-quality voice communication are even more tangible for enterprise users, who have been quick to recognize the potential impact of HD voice in business-critical areas such as conference calls and the fast-growing voice-recognition-services market.
