Dubai Chamber’s CSR newsletter promotes sustainable consumption

United Arab Emirates: Monday, July 13 - 2009 @ 15:14

With Ramadan approaching, the latest issue covers the topic of sustainable consumption from an international and Dubai-based perspective. The newsletter is raising awareness about sustainable consumption and the affecting of our consumption patterns and actions in our community.

The newsletter discusses the important role played by businesses in encouraging sustainable consumption such as creating industry guidelines, product design and advertising. Businesses set trends and expectations for consumers but by showing how a product can be used and properly recycled or disposed.

Under the headline “Luxurious Dubai”, another article puts luxury goods at the forefront of sustainable consumption. This is mainly due to the ability of luxury companies to influence patterns of sustainable consumption through product design, how it is used and how it is disposed of.

The newsletter highlights that the profiles of leading brands are changing as social aspects in particular are becoming increasingly important in driving brand value. An article explores some strategic reasons why luxury brands have begun the journey of being socially responsible. Some business-driven reasons include operational efficiency gains, enhanced employee relations and enhanced brand reputation and trust.

CSR Al Youm highlights the growth trend in the world’s human population which is expected to reach nine billion by 2050 driven largely by growth in developing countries with lower per-capita income. According to a recent report by World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD, we are exceeding Earth’s ability to support our lifestyles and three key drivers have been identified as drivers for consumption and they include rapid global population, the rise in global affluence and a culture of consumerism among higher income groups.

In an article entitled “Dilemma in Dubai”, UAE residents are given advice on how they can consume more responsibly. A section of the newsletter explores a new website called www.Ecofabulous.com which is dedicated to providing consumers with sustainable ways to maintain the current lifestyles.
