As part of its efforts to help the business community integrate CSR and sustainability into their strategy, the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network hosted a Workplace Health and Safety seminar at the Chamber premises recently.
The seminar was organised by the members of the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network Health & Safety Task Group as part of their objective to raise awareness and share best practices in workplace health and safety with the wider business community. This task group is led by ABB and the members are TNT, Tristar Group, Al Rostamani Pegel, du, Intercoil International LLC, Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, Standard Chartered Bank, Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), Palm Utilities and Henkel GCC.
Dr. Belaid Rettab, Senior Director, Economic Research and Sustainable Business Development Sector, Dubai Chamber, said that workplace safety and health bring multiple benefits not only to employees, but also to the business. This includes a more positive workplace culture; healthy, happy and motivated employees besides reduced economic cost and improved productivity outcomes.
Dr. Belaid Rettab further stated that the seminar demonstrates the “business case” for workplace health and safety, while providing practical information and guidelines to help companies develop action plans and implement health and safety programmes in their workplace and the community, adding that the Sustainability Network was an important element of Dubai Chamber’s overarching CSR strategy, which is helping to create awareness about the importance of CSR and sustainability in the emirate.
The seminar had detailed presentations on workplace health and safety from the members including Implementing and Managing Health and Safety Systems by Gary Foote, Head of Sustainability and OHS India Middle East & Africa Region, ABB, Road Safety by Faisal Bhatti, Group HSE Manager, Tristar, Office Safety – Health and Ergonomics by Daxita Rajcoomar, HSE Compliance Manager, Du, and on Risk Assessment by T.K. Muralidharan, HSSE Manager, Al Rostamani Pegel.
The Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network members are motivated by a shared vision to influence and lead CSR, sustainability and governance in the UAE, the region, and internationally. All members are involved in an on-going process that involves creation of tools and sharing of expertise and they also look at addressing sustainability challenges through collaborative action which will help them promote the concept of sustainability in the emirate.
The Centre for Responsible Business, which was formed in 2004, is the longest standing center promoting business responsibility in the UAE. The Centre not only assists Dubai Chamber members to apply responsible business practices that enhance performance and competitiveness but also offers a variety of educational, professional training and consulting services that are designed to build individual companies’ capacity to implement broad CSR programmes including business ethics, sustainability reporting and corporate governance.
