United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, October 21 - 2008 @ 12:54

The Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), a Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry initiative, is organizing two training courses on international commercial arbitration and construction contracts in light of rising cost.

The two courses are organized in cooperation with King’s College London, the courses will be held in conjunction with the Commercial Arbitration in Arab Countries Conference being organized from November 8 to 13, in collaboration with Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Tunisian Conciliation and Arbitration Centre and Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Centre.

The first four-day course running from November 8 to 11 targets beginners and people interested in international commercial arbitration. It will introduce participants to the multiple benefits of international commercial arbitration, modern practices and the importance of arbitration in settling commercial disputes between companies resulting from cross border agreements.

The two-day long second course running from November 9 to 10 will, for the first time, discuss construction contracts, focusing on tender submissions, cost evaluation, differences in prices of building materials during various phases including contract duration and the construction process.

Also during the event, interactive workshops will be held under the direction of Prof. Phillip Capper, Nash Professor of Engineering Law, King’s College London and partner White & Case LLP law firm, with the assistance of a team of international experts.

Dr. Hussam Al Talhuni, Director of DIAC, said:

“The courses actively contribute to raising the awareness and skills of contracting parties and educating them on the basics and methods of international commercial contracting. This will help them avoid disputes before signing contracts or opting for effective arbitration methods when disputes occur.”

“The construction contracts course,” explains Al Talhuni, “coincides well with the current regional construction boom and the latest rising prices and cost of building materials which are very important issues for the construction and real-estate sectors.”

The Conference, on the other hand, is held under the patronage of HE Dr. Hadif Bin Jauan Al Daheri, UAE Minister of Justice, with the aim of modernizing arbitration laws in Arab countries and their adherence to regional and international treaties and improving the skills of contracting parties.

The future role of courts, Arab commercial arbitration laws and arbitration in connection to attracting foreign direct investment to the region, will come under the spotlight at the Conference.
