Under the Patronage of the Dubai Municipality, Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) has organized recently Quality Assurance for Sustainable Construction Materials Conference at the Palace Hotel, Downtown Dubai.
The conference focused on the role of quality building materials in achieving higher standards for sustainability and safety in buildings, roads and bridges.
Eng. Amin Ahmed Mohammed Amin, Acting Director, Dubai Central Laboratory inaugurated the two-day conference which was attended by experts and major players in the field from across the world. While speaking in the inaugural function, Eng. Amin said the main objective of the conference is to obtain a better understanding of the overarching policies and future strategies of the government of Dubai and their practical implementation in the design, construction and maintenance processes.
The two-day event highlighted the Dubai Municipality’s approach to testing and quality control, as well as specifications requirements to further improve the sustainability and safety standard in the buildings and roads sector. Additionally, the conference provided insights into the latest research results and product technologies, presented by international industry experts. This new international platform brought together local and regional government legislators, construction professionals, manufacturers and researchers.
The first session, which focused on Sustainability & Safety in Buildings was chaired by Dr. Mohamad Nagi of American University in Dubai, who is also the Director of Infrastructure Sustainability & Assessment Center. Engineer Ali Elian, Head of Engineering Material Lab Section, Dubai Central Laboratory delivered key-note speech under the title, ‘Dubai Municipality’s Experience in Quality Assurance/Quality Control of Projects’. Professor Hussain U. Bahia, Professor & Director, MARC-University of Wisconsin chaired the second session which shed light on ‘Safety of Roads & Bridges’.
In this session, Dr. Mohammed Yousef, Head of Construction Supervision, Roads & Transport Authority delivered key-note speech in which he detailed on RTA strategies in upgrading the quality of roads and bridges in Dubai. Session 3 discussed on ‘Insulation & Retrofitting of Buildings’ and was chaired by Professor Mufid Samarai, Senior Advisor, Sharjah Research Academy. Kamal Azayem, Mechanical Engineering Expert, at Building Department of Dubai Municipality spoke on ‘Implementation of Green Building Regulations’ in this session.
Abdullah Mughrabi, Business Development Engineer, Al Jazeera Paints, Pedro Alonso, Housing and Concrete Building Project Manager, CEMEX, Osman Topcu, Technical Sales& Business Development Director, Ekopons Madencilik A.S, Lenine De Sousa, Technical Service Manager, WACKER, Professor Hussain U. Bahia Professor and Director, MARC-University of Wisconsin, Dr. Walid Nassar, Projects Director, PARSONS, Jesus Angel Perez Galnares, Civil Engineer, CEMEX, Vincent Briard, Head of Sustainability, Products& Buildings, KNAUF Insulations, Andrew Halycz, Building Simulation Specialist, KEO International Consultants and Mohammad Sanaobar, Head of Technical Centre Dubai, WACKER presented papers on various topics related to the subject.
The second day of the event was dedicated to project tours. Delegates visited DEWA Service Center Al-Quoz which is considered the largest LEED Platinum-Rated Government Building by Green Technologies as well as CEMEX Manufacturing Plant (JAFZA) as part of the event.
