United Arab Emirates: Sunday, March 21 - 2004 @ 14:36

The forum will be held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, and Chairman of Dubai Municipality.

Engineer Mattar Al Tayer, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Roads and General Projects Affairs, was speaking after he presided over the seventh preparatory meeting of the event’s Supreme Organising Committee.

The committee reviewed preparations being made and the efforts of subcommittees, including cultural and scientific subcommittee, public relations, media, marketing and financial subcommittees.

A special emphasis was laid on the opening ceremony of the forum, as well as the provision of health and medical services to delegates. The organising committee also discussed a special forum website.

The responsibility of holding an exhibition to accompany the forum was given to Engineer Mohammed Al Noori.

Mr. Al Tayer said: “The forum will seek to strengthen cooperation with the cities with which we have twinning protocols and cooperation and friendship pacts. They include Istanbul (Turkey), Osaka (Japan), Beirut (Lebanon Guang Xu and Shanghai (China), Geneva (Switzerland), Gold Coast (Australia), Casablanca (Morocco), Damascus (Syria) and Detroit (United States) and Jerusalem (Palestine)”.

He said cooperation would bolster interaction with these cities in economic, commercial, political and technical fields.

The Supreme Organising Committee includes Munther Akram Juma as deputy, Engineer Maryam Rashid Al Omarani, Khawla Jassim Al Serkal, Abdul Majeed Ahmed Al Hashemi (members) and Khalid Ahmed Al Zahid (member and arbitrator).

Subcommittee members include Samia Al Fuqai, head of Cultural and Scientific Activities, Ahmed Al Hamadi, head of the Media Subcommittee, Rashad Buksh, head of the Marketing Subcommittee, Mariyam Al Omrani, head of the PR subcommittee and Aref Abbas, Financial Director.

During the event, each city will showcase its experience on best practices. Cultural shows will also be staged by folkloric troupes from participating cities.

Mr. Al Tayer called on all organising committee members to implement plans in accordance with the time schedule endorsed, so that preparations can be completed in time for the big event.

The first twinning protocol between Dubai and cities around the world was with Casablanca of Morocco in 1994, followed with a protocol with Gold Coast of Australia in 1997, Detroit (US) in 1998, Shanghai (China) in 2000, besides cooperation protocols with Guang Xu, Damascus, Geneva, Beirut and Osaka and a cooperation pact with Jerusalem (Palestine).
