The three-day conference, which will see some 72 research papers from 26 countries and more than 400 participants from different parts of the world, will discuss key issues in the area of architectural conservation. The conference, organized by Dubai Municipality with the support of UNESCO, the Arab Institute for Cities Development and the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, focuses on two themes: the dialectic of Architectural Heritage – Theoretical Dimension and Future of Architectural Heritage – Applied Dimension. The first theme deals with such topics as policies of architectural conservation, historical buildings and zones, and protecting urban and architectural heritage in historical sectors, whereas the second theme deals with constructional conservation projects and sustainable development.
Qassim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality, on Saturday viewed facilities for the conference at the International Convention Centre. The organizing committee has completed all preparations for the conference, which will be held simultaneously at four halls at DICC. The inaugural session of the conference will be addressed by Qassim Sultan and Rashad Bukhash, Director of the General Projects Department at Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Organising Committee of the conference.
The exhibition, also to be opened by Sheikh Hamdan, will showcase state-of-the-art techniques in the field of architectural conservation. It will be attended by architects, specialized companies in the field of architecture, decision makers, industrialists and all concerned. The exhibition will also have display of the works of senior artists and photographers.
Dubai Municipality’s Historical Buildings Section has set up a huge pavilion in the exhibition displaying conservation projects undertaken by the civic body in Dubai. The 225 sq mtr pavilion is designed on the lines of traditional buildings. A film documenting renovation works undertaken by Dubai Municipality will be shown to the public at the pavilion which will also feature a live display of wood carving.
The plenary session of the conference, to be held at Hall 8, will be chaired by Eng. Mattar Al Tayer, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Roads and General Projects Affairs, will be addressed by Prince Sultan Bin Salman Bin Abdalaziz Al Soud, Secretary General of the Supreme Commission for Tourism of Saudi Arabia. He will present a paper on “Architectural Heritage: Future Aspirations”.
The second session of the day will be chaired by Dr. Nasser Saif Al Mansouri, Assistant Undersecretary of the Department of Planning, Abu Dhabi, and will be addressed by Architect Peter Jackson, Dr. Samia Rab, Dr. Amr Alhalafawy, Architect Hazim Mohammed, and Dr. Nabyl Chenaf.
The third session, to be chaired by Dr. Mohsen Aboulnaga, Dean, College of Design, Dubai University, will be addressed by Dr. Ahmed Ouf, Dr. Basil Kamel, Dr. Hebatalla Abouelfadl, Dr. Majd Al Homoud and Architect Zain Kharashfeh.
The fourth session, to be chaired by Architect AbdulRahman Al Sharid, Director of General Maintenance Department, Dubai Municipality, will be addressed by Dr. Mohamed Amin Mohamed, Eng. Nada Mamlouk, Dr. Hassan Wahbi, Dr. Sawsan Al Toukhi, Architect Maha Al Zubaidi, and Dr. Monther Jamhawi.
Participants of the conference will be taken on a tour of the historic sites in the evening which will culminate in a dinner at the Al Boum Tourist Village, said Rashad Bukhash, chairman of the organizing committee.
He noted that Dubai Municipality is organizing this international meeting to discuss the reflections of urban and architectural conservation policies on the potential role of the city with the aim of achieving a harmonious urban development that combines authenticity and synchronism.
The event is being sponsored by many big companies and establishments such as Emaar, Etisalat, Al Rostamani Group, Dubai Islamic Bank, Dubai National Bank and Ducab.
