Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA), announced the signing of a MoU on academic cooperation with World Maritime University (WMU), an educational agency operating under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This landmark event supports the vison for EIMA which has been established with the objective of becoming the Gulf’s Centre of Excellence for maritime education & is already considered a leading institution in this field.

His Excellency Khamis Juma Buamim, Chairman, Drydocks World & Maritime World said, “We are promoting all round excellence in maritime operations, training and education. EIMA’s Mission 2020 is part of the overall strategy to achieve this vision through which meaningful international associations will be forged with reputed maritime institutes all over the world that would help develop EIMA as a center of excellence in maritime studies.”

“WMU is pleased to enter into the Agreement with EIMA to support the regional and international maritime educational goals of the Academy. EIMA is an emerging maritime educational and training provider in the Middle East and the opportunities for collaboration between the Academy and WMU will certainly be of mutual benefit,” said Mr. Björn Kjerfve President of World Maritime University.

Eng. Ali bin Towaih Alsuwaidi, Vice President Business Development, Commercial and Project Management, Drydocks World & Maritime World said, “This MoU will add value to EIMA’s reputation as a key player in education since the University is directly linked to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is the ultimate maritime related decision-making body. In addition, it will also give EIMA international status & credibility in being able to offer Post Graduate level courses by 2015.”

The MoU was signed by Eng. Ali Alsuwaidi, and Mr. Björn Kjerfve, at the Maritime Business Centre in Dubai Maritime City (DMC). This collaboration between Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) and World Maritime University (WMU) furthers the combined vision of the organizations to build a sustainable world and develop future global maritime leaders, experts and professionals through maritime education and research. World Maritime University’s mission to promote the international exchange and transfer of maritime best practice to a maritime hub of Middle East is reflected by this partnership.

EIMA had earlier launched Mission 2020 in association with Aries International Maritime Research Institute (AIMRI), a premier i-university imparting high quality Maritime technical education, which will place a number of initiatives to bring qualified and competent nationals into the industry and provide them growth opportunities to become leaders of the future. The MoU with WMU will contribute to the realization of Mission 2020 by promoting academic information exchange between the two entities, foster education in WMU’s degree programs, further the development of professional courses, distance education and field training, promote research, technical, and scientific cooperation and exchange of faculty members.

Located within DMC, the hub of maritime activity in the Middle East, EIMA focuses on developing and improving the skills of future generations by enabling them to work onboard ships as officers and engineers. Courses offered by EIMA and its partners are internationally accredited and recognized through professional bodies, institutions and renowned universities and include accreditations under IMO, SOLAS, OPITO, NTA and DNV, making EIMA a one- stop-shop for all aspects of marine and maritime education.

Practical exposure will be offered through EIMA’s association with Drydocks World and Maritime World which can cater to all types of technical training at its training centre. The current infrastructure at EIMA can accommodate up to 20,000 students a year and the plan is to develop a maritime centre of excellence including the establishment of a research institute with the largest Towing Tank facility in the world. This centre will enable industry players in the shipping, maritime, oil, gas, energy and offshore industry to fully meet their skill requirements and attract a global student base in the UAE by 2020.
