Baker & McKenzie has further enhanced its top tier offering in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Bahrain with the hire of leading banking and finance lawyer Basel Barakat as a Partner.
Basel Barakat joins from Saudi Arabian firm, the Law Firm of Hassan Mahassni. He will initially divide his time between Baker & McKenzie’s associated office in Riyadh* and the Firm’s Bahrain office.
His practice is focused on project finance, Islamic finance and syndicated lending, among other transactional work. He has advised on the majority of the project financing arrangements for Saudi Arabia’s IWPP and IPP programmes to date and on the project financing arrangements for some of the most prestigious Saudi Arabian infrastructure projects.
He has been consistently recognised by legal directories for his banking and finance work. He is ranked in Band 1 by Chambers Global for Saudi Arabian banking and finance work and is recognised as a Leading Lawyer in Saudi Arabia by IFLR1000 and as a Leading Individual by Legal 500 EMEA for banking and finance in Saudi Arabia.
This recognition complements Baker & McKenzie’s existing ranking by Legal 500 EMEA and IFLR1000 as the leading banking and finance practice in Bahrain, while Legal Advisors in association with Baker & McKenzie is ranked top tier in all main directories and practice areas in Saudi Arabia.
Basel is a member of the New York State Bar and holds law degrees from New York University School of Law and The University of Notre Dame Law School, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.
“We are delighted to welcome a lawyer of Basel’s quality to Baker & McKenzie’s strong Gulf finance team,” said Ian Siddell, co-managing partner of Baker & McKenzie’s Bahrain and Doha offices, and its affiliated office in Riyadh. “His experience advising on many of the most complex and largest financings in Saudi Arabia over the past decade will add significant value to our client offering.”
Basel added: “Baker & McKenzie has a stellar reputation for Saudi Arabian legal work. The firm has been consistently top-ranked across the board over the years and provides an excellent global platform from which to continue my focus on the Saudi Arabian legal market.”
The Firm opened an associated office in Riyadh in 1980, the first global firm to do so, then opening an office in Bahrain in 1999. More recently the Firm opened offices in Abu Dhabi (2009), Doha (2011) and Dubai (2013), with more than 100 lawyers and staff now serving clients in Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
