The tourism sector is playing an increasingly important role within the economy of the Sultanate, and according to a recent report by the UN World Tourism Organisation (WTO), 2013 saw the Oman’s tourism revenue exceed the $1 billion mark for the first time last year. Alongside the challenges to be faced by a growing tourism industry is the need to recruit and train individuals who will meet the demands of the hospitality sector, deliver excellence in customer service and promote further growth.

The Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa is successfully meeting this challenge by implementing staff training specifically designed to develop best in-class customer service through modules such as Supervisory Excellence and Executive Leadership programmes. As an added level of employee development, Shangri-La also sends their employees to the world famous Shangri-La Academy in Hong Kong where they attend intensive skill development courses for up to a month in duration.

Commenting on the career development provided by the Shangri-La, Nasser Al Waheibi, Service Manager of F&B Banquets joined the resort as a trainee whilst a student of the Oman Tourism College in 2006. Over the last eight years his career progression has taken him from Service Associate in Food and Beverage to Service Manager, an experience he relates to be greatly fulfilling.

Hehighlights some of the personal qualities needed to succeed in the hospitality industry by explaining, “The hospitality sector can provide great levels of job satisfaction, but it needs individuals who are self motivated and have perseverance. There are so many opportunities offered by hotels who are keen to up-skill their staff with ongoing training and development, thereby preparing them for the challenges they might face while offering a steady career progressionfor the future.
