New hope for arthritis patients in Kuwait

Kuwait: Monday, October 27 - 2008 @ 14:10

The Hadi Clinic has introduced a new and advanced type of surgery in Kuwait; the total knee and hip replacement procedures are based on the latest surgical practices and use the most advanced joint implant technology available. The new surgeries have been introduced with the arrival of the hospital’s new orthopedic consultant, Dr Frank Barnbeck, who brings over 30 years of top level experience in the field.

“Patients in Kuwait have traditionally gone abroad for this kind of operation and now Kuwaitis have the option of having a total joint replacement operation in their own country and we can see the level of interest is growing,” said Dr Barnbeck. “A vital aspect of the total joint replacement procedure is the relationship and trust between patient and doctor; if the operation is undertaken in Kuwait, the surgeon can perform both the surgery and the follow up, helping to develop a close bond between patient and physician which is a significant advantage in delivering successful treatment.”

Arthritis of the knee is especially common amongst women in Kuwait and other Arab countries because of the cultural and religious requirements for kneeling to pray and to eat, which demands a full flex of the knee joint. An advanced knee joint implant can help patents regain their former lifestyle to a large degree.

It is estimated that total knee replacements represent almost 90 percent of the total arthroplasty cases performed in the region. The number of total knee replacement operations compared to hip replacements is almost 8:1 within Kuwait. As experience of the procedure grows in the region, combining the efforts of surgeons and the orthopedic industry and the manufacturing companies is critically beneficial at this stage.

Dr Frank Barnbeck started his career in total joint replacement – hip and knee – in his native Germany almost 25 years ago and his international career has included not only surgery but also teaching roles. Dr Barnbeck uses the most advanced techniques and implant technology in total joint replacement, to best serve the needs of the patient.

“The choice of implant is made based on the needs of the patient, such as durability to assure the maximum longevity for the patient with the least complications possible, whilst making sure that it functions perfectly for as long as possible. Of course, the artificial implant must be implanted correctly, and that means using the right surgical equipment and techniques that will help the surgeon align and correctly position the implant to help the patient regain knee functionality.”

According to Dr Barnbeck, the knee system of choice must offer the option of minimally invasive surgery. For his first surgeries, he has selected a new knee joint, called Genesis II – precision manufactured in a patented new material – Oxidised Zirconium or ‘Oxinium’ – a metallic alloy with a ceramic surface, which improves wear resistance, hardness and lubricity of the knee joint, and extends the working life of the joint, which is important especially in a region where knee replacement patients are relatively young. The Genesis II knee implant is designed to last for more than 20 years and also results in greater flexion for the patient.

The first total joint replacement surgery at the Hadi Clinic was performed on a 65 year old female patient who was suffering from severe varus arthritis and after a total joint replacement of her right knee sing the Genesis implant, she was discharged from hospital after seven days with no swelling, no edema and she was able to walk with the aid of crutches.

Hadi Clinic was the first premier private clinic in Kuwait, and works in affiliation with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in the US. The hospital has a staff of over 300 medical professionals and 135 beds, supported by state of the art facilities providing the highest standard of care to patients in a choice of rooms and suites.
