St. Regis Hotels and Resorts and Jazz at Lincoln Center present Jazz At Lincoln Center Doha

Qatar: Monday, December 05 - 2011 @ 09:37

The event was hosted by Wynton Marsalis, jazz musician and Artistic Director of JALC; Omar Alfardan, President of the Resorts Development Company, the parent company of The St. Regis Doha and Al Gassar Resort; Adrian Ellis, Executive Director of JALC; and Tareq Derbas, General Manager of The St. Regis Doha. Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha will debut at the new St. Regis Doha, both scheduled to open in the spring of 2012.

Tareq Derbas, General Manager of The St. Regis Doha, said: “Jazz is integral to the St. Regis legacy and we look forward to bringing the authentic jazz experience to life for our guests and for music enthusiasts in the region. We are encouraged by the positive response from the people of Qatar and believe that Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha will reinforce the city’s position as an emerging cultural centre in the Middle East, thanks to the vision of Mr. Omar Alfardan. Today’s event is the first step in a continued, wide-ranging educational programme, through which we aim to engage the local community.”

With monthly programming led by JALC, Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha will showcase and cultivate the best jazz talent in the world. In addition to performances at The St. Regis Doha, a supporting educational programme will be developed to bring a range of cultural and educational opportunities to the people of Qatar.

As part of his visit to Doha, Marsalis also met with some 50 students from the Qatar Music Academy. The musician, who was the first jazz artist to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music, discussed the challenges and rewards of music as a discipline, and participated in an improvisational session with traditional Arabian instruments and jazz.

“Thank you to the Qatari people for such a warm welcome. Throughout the history of jazz, musicians from Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Brubeck have brought people from all cultures together through this music. It is an honour for JALC to continue this tradition in Doha with St. Regis,” added Marsalis.

A not-for-profit organisation, JALC is dedicated to developing audiences for jazz by producing a year-round schedule of performance, education and broadcast events for audiences of all ages. As part of this new collaboration between St. Regis Hotels & Resorts and JALC, there are plans to open five jazz clubs in new St. Regis hotels around the world over the next five years, extending the programme to a wider global audience.

The St. Regis Doha, the first St. Regis hotel in Qatar, will become a modern landmark in the capital and is expected to become the finest address in Doha. Continuing a century-old tradition, every guest at The St. Regis Doha will enjoy the brand’s signature butler service during their stay, ensuring the highest levels of bespoke hospitality.

The hotel will feature 336 luxurious guest rooms, including 70 suites and 2 presidential suites – all offering breath-taking sea views. The elegant facilities of the hotel include a wide array of dining venues, a world-class Remède Spa, oceanfront cabanas, and over 4,000-square-metres of meeting and event space, including the second largest Ballroom in Qatar.
