Switzerland Tourism launches operations in GCC region

Switzerland Tourism, the country’s official marketing organisation, has opened its office at the Dubai headquarters of SWISS International Air Lines, and will offer tour operators and travel agents promotional and support services for Arab travellers, and the region’s large expatriate community.

Announcing the new GCC representation at a press conference in Dubai, Jürg Schmid, CEO and President, Switzerland Tourism said, “The GCC region is a very important market for us – reflected in the high number of GCC residents that travel to Switzerland. For 2001, we welcomed 217,000 Gulf residents – an increase of 15 per cent from the year before.”

“By the year end, we’re expecting 300,000 overnight visitors from the Gulf to travel to Switzerland, and for 2003 we’re expecting this number to increase further thanks to the opening of our office here. Switzerland offers a host of options to holidaymakers and businesses with multifaceted interests, and we are confident that the country is a huge draw within this region.”

The most popular destinations among Arab travellers are Geneva with 50 per cent choosing this magnificent lakeside city, followed by Zurich at 17 per cent. The average length of stay is 4.5 days, while daily expenditure equates to US$ 300 (CHF 450).

Jamal Kleibo, the representative for Switzerland Tourism in Dubai added, “We’re marketing Switzerland as the number one destination of choice among GCC residents. We’re targeting travel agents across the region for both leisure, as well as corporate business, and have produced a number of brochures highlighting different aspects of this spectacular country.”

“Switzerland offers a wealth of incentives from beautiful scenery, warm hospitality, excellent hotel accommodation, efficient transport system and security, to world renowned private schools, health and wellness centres, and of course luxurious shopping. It offers the perfect climate to escape from the region’s hot summer months, while also a haven for winter sporting enthusiasts.”

Switzerland Tourism’s website www.MySwitzerland.com is the only destination portal in the world to assemble all country information as a holiday destination or a conference venue in nine languages. It enables visitors to plan a trip right down to the last detail, by providing general information as well as specifics on the selected region.

2002 has been declared by the United Nations as the ‘Year of the Mountains’, while next year will become the “Year of the Water’ and Switzerland Tourism is utilising these themes to promote a fascinating blend of culture, history, and tradition at the heart of Europe. Switzerland is gaining popularity for its summer exhibitions, musical, art and cultural events, while offering specially tailored packages for winter sports, summer leisure spas, and beauty clinics.
