Muscat International Airport witnessed a significant growth in aircraft movements and passenger numbers during the first quarter (Q1) of 2014. The total number of flights increased by 4% reaching 20,235 flight movements, compared with 19,449 recorded during the same period in 2013. The number of international and domestic passengers handled at the end of March 2014 reached 2,212,924 passengers, compared with 2,047,395 in 2013, reflecting an annual increase of 8.1%.
Breaking down the numbers issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total number of international flights in Muscat International Airport at the end of Q1 2014 reached 17,961 flights, compared with 17,418 flights during the same period in 2013, representing an annual increase of 3.1%. Statistics also reveal the total number of international arrival, departure and transit passengers recorded at Muscat International Airport increased by 8%, reaching 2,017,877 passengers, compared with 1,868,439 passengers during the same period in 2013, this figure is represented by 1,018,713 arrival passengers, 987,930 departure passengers and 11,234 transit passengers.
The total number of domestic flights at Muscat International Airport at the end of Q1 2014 reached 2,274 flights, representing an increase of 12% when compared to the same period in 2013, while the total number of domestic passengers increased by 9%, reaching 195,047, compared with 178,956 passengers during the same period in 2013.
According to the NCSI figures, traffic movements at Salalah Airport showed positive growth in Q1 2014, with flight and passenger numbers increasing significantly. The total number of flights during the first quarter reached 1,940 flights, compared with 1,344 flights during the same period in 2013, recording an annual growth of 44.3%. Meanwhile, the total number of passengers recorded an increase of 17.7%, reaching 193,383 passengers, compared with 164,241 passengers during the same period in 2013.
Air movement statistics reveal that the number of international flights at Salalah Airport reached 724 flights for Q1 2014, compared with 262 flights during the same period in 2013, a significant annual growth figure of 176.3%. The total number of international passengers increased by 72.4% in Q1, reaching 55,068 passengers compared with 31,948 passengers recorded in the same period in 2013. Meanwhile, the total number of domestic flights at Salalah Airport increased by 12.4%, reaching 1,216 flights compared with 1,082 flights during the same period in 2013. Domestic passenger numbers also increased by 4.6%, reaching 138,315 passengers, compared with 138,315 passengers during the same period in 2013.
