Showcasing the artistic developments of the UAE on a world stage, the UAE Pavilion will be one of more than seventy national pavilions in the Biennale, which attracts more than 900,000 influential visitors from around the world.
Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) will present a preview and panel discussion of the UAE Pavilion on Thursday, 26 March at the Emirates Palace. The three-part programme, UAE Pavilion at Venice Biennale, is part of the ongoing Talking Art programme created in conjunction with Emirati Expressions, a landmark exhibition of contemporary art from the United Arab Emirates.
• Inside a Curator’s Mind, 18:00
UAE Pavilion curator Tirdad Zolghadr previews artwork and concepts that will be presented at Venice, set within the context of other exhibitions organised by Zolghadr in Europe and the Middle East, and the future of curating on an international scale.
• Panel Discussion, 19:00
Tirdad Zolghadr will be joined by leading UAE art world representatives Sultan Al-Qassemi, Mishaal Al Gergawi, Sunny Rahbar, and Shumon Basar for a panel discussion titled I knew this would happen – UAE Pavilion at Venice Biennale. The discussion will explore issues relating to the UAE Pavilion, including the new perspectives that an international event such as the Venice Biennale can bring to the cultural landscape of the UAE; the key challenges facing UAE artists today in having their work understood by and presented to international audiences; and the potential of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District to engage local artists.
The UAE Pavilion is the nation’s official contribution to the Venice Biennale’s 53rd International Art Exhibition, which will be held June 7 through November 22, 2009. The UAE Pavilion at the Venice Biennale is initiated and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, the Emirates Foundation and Dubai Culture.
