In a major milestone for Abu Dhabi‘s engineering and manufacturing sectors, a state-of-the-art Mechanical Engineering lab has been officially inaugurated at Abu Dhabi University. Faculty, staff, students and members of the public explored the new facility and were given demonstrations of some of the hi-tech equipment, as ADU shared its 10th anniversary celebrations with its community.

Engineering students led the visitors on a tour of through the four main areas of the new facility: the hi-tech Machine Shop; Thermal Lab; Manufacturing, Computer-Aided Design, Computer-Aided Manufacturing and Strength of Materials Lab; and the Dynamics, Control and Mechatronics Lab.

The advanced new lab is operated with modern equipment that fulfills international standards as it has been benchmarked against one of the world’s leading engineering institutions, Canada’s University of Victoria in British Columbia. (This is part of ADU’s extensive global partnerships in applied research, while also strengthening the UAE’s industrial capacity in time for the anticipated surge in demand for engineering roles prior to World Expo 2020.)

Addressing distinguished guests at the inauguration, Dr Nabil Ibrahim, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University said: “Abu Dhabi has set an ambitious vision of fully diversifying its economyby 2030, particularly in the industrial sector. At the same time, we expect a massive surge of demand in the manufacturing sector due to World Expo 2020. However, innovation does not simply begin with the manufacturing companies themselves; it starts with a more innovative way of teaching and learning and that’s where ADU comes in.”

The facility is also expected to enhance the already high employability of ADU graduates, which currently stands at over 90%. Students of Abu Dhabi University’s College of Engineering will gain practical exposure to the machinery and processes that they will meet in the working environment. These include advanced Robots, Conveyer Systems simulating real-world factories, Cross Heat Flow Exchanger for thermal experiments and Computer Numerical Control machines.

Dr Ibrahim concluded: “Whether in the fields of aeronautical, automotive, manufacturing, mechatronics, mining, petroleum, thermal power, hydro services or any other fields, we will be the incubator and catalyst of student innovation. This facility is not only a testament of our decade of achievements, but will also propel ADU to even greater pioneering accomplishments.”
