TCA Abu Dhabi organises Artscape

: Monday, June 16 - 2014 @ 18:14

Bringing A History of the World in 100 Objects to life, the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) organises Artscape, a celebratory evening of art and music that will take visitors back in time and across the globe, allowing them to engage with the compelling objects that have defined the path of human history. Running as part of the exhibition programme for A History of the World in 100 Objects, the event will take place on 18 June in Manarat Al Saadiyat from 6-9 p.m.

Inspired by the artworks and artefacts, visitors can see in the exhibition, Artscape’s live performances and workshops will mix ancient and modern musical forms; including Magic Mirror by the renowned gu qin player Wu Na, and the contemporary artist Feng Mengbo on drums as well as a famous show of Wayangkulit shadow-puppetry.

These live performances will be accompanied by a number of interactive workshops such as The History of Chocolate in Mexico, which will be presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico and led by Chef Santos Esteban Pére. A workshop, When Art Meetsshop, When Art Meets Football, is inspired by the counterfeit football shirt featured in the exhibition, of Didier Drogba, an Ivory Coast footballer who grew up in France and plays for Chelsea F.C.

Sara Ali Al Aidarous, Public Engagement Officer at TCA Abu Dhabi said, “Bringing to life the themes and stories that make up A History of the World in 100 Objects, Artscape offers an unforgettable evening of live performances and dynamic workshops. We hope the evening will encourage the wider Abu Dhabi community to come and see first-hand why this version of history told through objects in the exhibition, is a thoroughly unique and entertaining experience.”

Continuing the cross-cultural nature of the event, shadow-puppetry Wayangkulit will be presented in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia. Puppet-master Dory Repyonugroho alongside Bambang Sarbudiyono and a team of seven gamelan musicians will perform the well-known Mahabharata Gatotka Gandrung, a story of Gatotkaca who falls in love with Arimbi and fights over her with his rivals.

The programme for Artscape is inspired by objects in the exhibition A History of the World in 100 Objects. Third in a series of major exhibitions leading to the opening of Zayed National Museum in 2016, A History of the World in 100 Objects is being held at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District for another 46 days.

Running alongside the exhibition is a full public program of workshops, tours and seminars including Artscape on the 18 June at 6pm.
