The competition organized by The Poetry Academy of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) has received thousands of registration requests since the door was open last June. The total number of registered poets has exceeded the number of poets who participated in the last session.
Sultan Al Amimi, Director of Poetry Academy and member of the organizing committee, said:
so far thousands of requests from all over the Arab World in addition to Arabs based in the Americas and European countries. Many of the poets who participated in the firs sessions of the program have register this session too.”
On the other hand, the specialized committee is continuing its work to examine the sample poems of the registered poets to check the validity and appoint the audition date latter.
“Such creative project will allow new talented poets to be exposed to the public and to be critic by a specialized judges,” Al Amimi added.
The TV competition, broadcast on Abu Dhabi TV weekly, serves to enhance Arabic poetry and reinstate the popularity of Arabic literature. This has been consistently prominent throughout the past few centuries, particularly in the field of poetic literature. There has been a renaissance in the popularity of poetry from pre-Islamic times and from the golden age of the Abbasid era.
The ‘Prince of Poets’ is renowned as a cultural competition and it was launched in Abu Dhabi in April 2007. Poets compete in all forms of classical poetry. They can enter poems in a variety of styles, whether it is a metric (traditional) poem, or a free verse one.
Participation in the fourth session of the competition is only open to poets aged between eighteen and forty-five. It is limited to poems written in classical Arabic. Those who wish to participate must send their poem via e-mail to [email protected], including the poem itself as an attachment.
Traditional poems and free verse poems are accepted, but participants should note that prose poems are not being considered.
Each poem must contain at least twenty verses, but should not exceed thirty verses. Contestants who wish to submit free verse work are allowed to do so provided that the poems consist of only two parts containing no more than fifteen lines each.
Candidates are required to send a brief biography showing their date of birth, literary activities or achievements, and their permanent address.
