Toyota sales highlight strong demand

Sales of Toyota vehicles have steadily increased over the past few years, indicating a growth in demand for the Japanese vehicles. Compared to 2002 there was an increase of nearly 23 percent in total vehicle sales.

Colin Leitch, Managing Director of Al Futtaim Motors, commented: “We are very proud of Toyota’s sales performance last year, especially given the fact that the UAE is a very competitive arena for the car industry. We believe that our record-breaking figures are a result of an outstanding product line-up which features reliability, quality and performance as priorities.”

Toyota ventured into a new field by tapping into the youth market with the new xA. The car, launched in the second half of the year, is characterised by a style that blends the active look of an SUV with the sophisticated quality of a passenger vehicle.

Leitch commented: “The Toyota xA represents Toyota’s bold move into a specific market segment, which is completely new territory. Besides it is also a good example of the brand’s ability to anticipate shifts in the market and consequently develop, a suitable product to meet the demands of the new generation”.

The xA proved to be a successful move by Toyota, selling 100 units within the first month of its launch in the UAE and surpassing initial forecasts. The xA success story has continued post-launch with Al Futtaim Motors selling over 70 units a month. The company had to increase orders to Japan to enable them to meet demands of car-buyers.

Other Toyota car models also fared well in 2003 sales figures. In the passenger car category, there was a 22 percent increase in sales of the Corolla, while Echo sales jumped by 27 percent. As for the light commercial vehicle range offered by Toyota, Hilux vehicle sales went up by 14 percent, and Hiace sales soared with a massive 31 percent increase. Finally, Land Cruiser Station Wagons proved popular in the Emirates, registering an 8 percent increase in demand while sales of the new Prado increased by a massive 173 percent.

Leitch concluded: “The incredible sales results of 2003 are a clear indication that our discerning customers, who have a world of options to choose from when purchasing a new vehicle, recognize that Toyota offers unrivalled quality, reliability, low overall cost of ownership and value for money. Our excellent Customer Service programme, including after-sales service, also adds real value to our superior products.”
