New 2007 GL-Class: A paragon of luxury SUVs

Bahrain: Wednesday, November 15 - 2006 @ 14:30

The new seven-seater premium off-roader has been lauded a paragon of luxury SUVs from Mercedes-Benz to date.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Shawqi Taqi, Assistant Sales Manager, Al Haddad Motors, asserted that, “Observers will be in no doubt as to the strong character displayed by this robust, muscular, and powerful, full-size Sport Utility Vehicle from Mercedes-Benz: fashioned with a typically off-road body with short overhangs, yet sporty and dynamic, the GL’s vibrant personality is mesmerizing.”

“The new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class provides drivers with all the requirements of a futuristic luxury SUV, including: unrivalled driving comfort, compelling on and off-road performance coupled with superior fuel consumption figures, without compromising the typical Mercedes-Benz off-roader genes of superlative dynamism, ruggedness and long-term durability,” Mr. Taqi continued.

Highlighting one of the most noteworthy characteristics of the GL-Class, Mr. Taqi categorically classified its, “Distinction for being the only full-sized SUV with unit body construction, and an efficient 4MATIC 7-speed adaptive transmission which ‘learns’ the driver’s style and shifts accordingly.”

The GL-Class 450 with a 4.6 litre V8 engine produces 340 hp and displays a spacious and well-proportioned body (length 5088 mm, width 1920 mm, height 1840 mm). The distance to the middle row of seats is 815 mm, with 979 mm headroom for passengers. If fewer seats are required, the rear individual seats can be stowed electrically at the push of a button, either individually or in tandem to provide a completely flat load surface.

In line with the wide range of applications handled by the versatile all-rounder, the GL-Class THERMATIC automatic climate control system provides consistent temperature for all seven seats. The GL 450 comes with an additional standard-fit multi-zone THERMOTRONIC system, which offers even more climatic comfort.

Other standard-fit convenience and comfort appointments include ARTICO man-made leather upholstery combinations, electrically adjustable front seats and a fixed rear glass roof above the third row of seats.

The 2007 GL-Class redefines all the requirements of a luxury SUV- particularly in terms of safety- with the PRE-SAFE accident prevention system fitted as a standard; the first time a system of this kind has been offered in a vehicle in this segment.

The GL-Class makes full use of the advantages of its unitised body, combining optimum strength with intelligent lightweight steel design; the result is excellent passive safety. Combined with the front and rear deformation zones, the high-strength occupant cell forms an efficient base for the occupant protection systems that include: adaptive, two-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger; side bags in the front, and in the middle row of seats as an option; window bags across all three rows of seats from the A to the D-pillar; and NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger as an option.

The GL-Class, with its permanent four-wheel drive system from Mercedes-Benz, has superior handling whatever the conditions. Special off-road features such as Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), hill-start assist, and off-road ABS, assist the GL-Class driver off road.

As part of an extensive marketing communications program to launch its first full-size SUV, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a bilingual internet micro-site aimed at providing its Middle East customers with comprehensive details about its new GL-Class luxury seven-seater off-roader and the opportunity to book a test drive.
