The initiative is part of the government’s effort to introduce a systematic, effective and eco-friendly waste collection and disposal in the Sultanate under its Integrated National Solid Waste Management Program.
In this project, Al Majal shall undertake coordination, logistic and facilitation work to provide a comprehensive study identifying three (3) engineered non-hazardous waste landfill sites and sixteen 16) waste transfer stations in Al Batinah. The main objectives of this site identification scheme are the following: (a) select the most appropriate sites where such facilities could be established with the least environmental disturbances taking into account socio-economic factors, (b) make an assessment of future demand of land for waste disposal in landfills in this Region, and (c) provide scientific basis to convince decision makers and the public that the selected sites are environmentally friendly.
The study is being done under the careful guidance of Oman Environmental Service Holdings Company (OESHCo), an agency established to oversee and execute projects related to waste management in the Sultanate. The Al Batinah project is just one of several site identification projects being undertaken under OESHCo.
According to Ahmed Al Sabahi, Al Majal CEO, the Al Batinah site identification project will contribute in environmental protection in the region in anticipation of increasing waste statistics due to growth and development.
Al Majal recently completed satellite imaging and topographic survey, while in the process of completing an Integrated Impact Assessment of the Barca Landfill, one of the sites under study in Al Batinah Region. These initiatives are geared towards concrete plans to set up an engineered landfill in the area that will have the least impact on society, the economy and the environment. Al Majal is simultaneously conducting several environmental impact assessment projects for private companies.
Al Majal’s environmental consultancy service is one part of its range of services which also include green buildings, sustainability and CSR and management systems. Al Majal last year launched the cutting-edge water saving campaign using water saving devices. Al Majal through its programs and services continues to provide solutions to sustainability challenges.
