American Chamber of Commerce in Qatar “AmCham Qatar”, in partnership with the National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce “NUSACC”, hosted U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker at a special edition of its Distinguished Speaker Series.

The Secretary discussed her Middle East trade mission with AmCham Qatar members, influential business leaders and members of the media. She highlighted growing commercial ties between Qatar and the U.S., and American efforts to boost exports to the region in the infrastructure sector, including project management and engineering; construction, architecture and design; and renewable energy and environmental technologies.

Secretary Pritzker is currently leading a delegation of 21 American companies on a trade mission to the Gulf – her first trade mission outside North America as Secretary of Commerce. The trade mission demonstrates the United States’ commitment to a sustained economic partnership in the Gulf region.

“I am so pleased to be joined on this trade mission by 21 U.S. firms that are eager to partner with government and industry in Qatar,” said Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. “The United States and our businesses truly value our strong commercial and economic ties with the Gulf region, and recognize that working together is a win-win. American companies have the expertise to help Qatar construct world-class infrastructure, and when U.S. firms sell their goods and services to new markets, the American economy stands to gain. I hope this trade mission will lead to many more mutually-beneficial relationships between our two nations,” Penny added.

AmCham members enthusiastically welcomed Secretary Pritzker’s focus on promoting trade and investment while connecting U.S. businesses with potential customers across the globe. AmCham Qatar Chairman Robert A. Hager said, “On behalf of AmCham Qatar’s 128 members, I extend our deepest gratitude to Secretary Pritzker for prioritizing Qatar and the Gulf and taking the time to connect with the vibrant and growing contingent of American businesses operating here. In partnership with the American Embassy in Doha and our colleagues at NUSACC, we were honored to host and hear from such a distinguished and hands-on advocate with a deep understanding of the business challenges and opportunities in the region.”

The U.S. posted a trade surplus with Qatar of $2.6bn from January-August 2013. U.S. exports to Qatar totaled $4.95bn throughout 2013, establishing a new record and underscoring the growing importance of the Gulf as an American export market. Since the launch of the U.S. National Export Initiative in 2010, exports to Qatar have increased by 56%.

Later this month members of AmCham Qatar’s Executive Committee and Board of Governors will lead a delegation to Washington, D.C. to meet Congressional leaders and Administration officials to discuss opportunities for American businesses in Qatar and Qatari investment in the U.S.

AmCham Qatar hosts a monthly Distinguished Speaker Series featuring thought leaders from institutions such as The Brookings Doha Center, Soufan Group, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Northwestern University, Patton Boggs LLP, Atkins and PwC.
