The Laboratory of the American Hospital Dubai has earned its seventh consecutive accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.
American Hospital Dubai Laboratory is one of 7,500 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide and was the first private medical laboratory in the region to be accredited by CAP. The Hospital was also the first private institution in the region to be awarded Joint Commission International accreditation.
The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the US federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program comprising over 3000 inspection checklist items.
During the CAP accreditation process, trained voluntary inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest ongoing laboratory standard of care for all patients.
In its letter to the Hospital confirming the successful accreditation, CAP states: “Congratulations on the excellent services that your laboratory is providing for your community and the efforts that you have made towards accreditation. We value your participation in the CAP’s Accreditation Programs.”
Aaron Han, MD, PhD, Chief, Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine at the American Hospital Dubai, comments: “We are delighted to receive this accreditation from CAP, which continues to set the standards that drive quality in the medical laboratory environment. Maintaining these standards as the hospital continues to grow and develop is a challenge that the team is meeting successfully, and we continue to invest significantly to ensure these standards are met or exceeded. Achieving CAP accreditation demonstrates the commitment of our lab staff to quality and excellence every day. This is a goal that has been supported by the American Hospital Dubai leadership over the last 17 years.”
The College of American Pathologists is a medical society that serves more than 18,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The CAP is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care.
Mr David Farrick, Acting CEO of the American Hospital Dubai, adds: “The Lab is an essential and integral part of the hospital, playing a key role in the multidisciplinary team approach to providing the best medical care, 24/7. It also plays an increasingly central role in guiding the treatment delivered by our physicians in the age of targeted therapies. We are very proud of our unique record of international accreditations – CAP and JCI – which independently confirms that we are achieving the highest quality of care and safety for our patients.”
