41 active submarine cable systems connect the Arab World

A new report from the Arab Advisors Group profiles the existing and planned submarine cable systems with landing stations in 21 Arab countries by June 2014. The analysis reveals that the number of multi-country submarine cable systems connecting the Arab countries is expected to reach 50 systems by 2016.

The report covers a total of 50 existing and planned submarine cable systems in the Arab world. By June 2014, there were 41 multi-country submarine cable systems with landing points in the Arab World, up from 39 by August 2012. Additionally, there were 2 main active cable systems with plans to land in one of the Arab countries in the near future. The remaining 7 planned submarine cable systems are not yet operational.

The report mainly focuses on and profiles the main submarine cable systems in the Arab World with landing stations in three or more countries. The profiles include information such as the submarine cable’s length, the date of launch, the system’s total capacity, vendors and the cable system’s landing points per country, in addition to the system’s total cost when available.

“As of June 2014, the UAE had the largest number of active submarine cables, reaching 16. Saudi Arabia and Egypt followed, with 14 each.” Miss Rawan Awwad, a Research Analyst at Arab Advisors Group, stated. “On the other hand, the Palestinian Authority was not connected to any submarine cable system, whereas Comoros, Jordan and Somalia were connected to one system only.” Miss Awwad further added.
