Atkins is set to celebrate a decade of partnering with the British University in Dubai (BUiD) after renewing its agreement to sponsor the Chair for Sustainable Design of the Built Environment.
BUiD has progressed on the sustainability research agenda in the last 10 years. The two organisations have agreed a three-year contract extension which will see them sharing knowledge and technical expertise in order to deliver practical, evidence-based research.
Simon Moon, Middle East CEO for Atkins, said: “Our relationship with the British University in Dubai is very special to us, and it serves two very important purposes. On the one hand, it is part of our commitment to investing in the next generation of talent in our sector, while on the other it is about enabling research into innovative sustainable solutions for our future urban environments.
“This combined proposition is an extremely powerful one for Atkins, and we’re looking forward to building an even closer mutually beneficial relationship with BUiD over the next three years.”
Atkins’ funding for BUiD enabled the appointment of highly respected Academic Professor Bassam Abu Hijleh as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT and Head of Programme for the MSc Sustainable Design of the Built Environment. Prof Bassam raised awareness and built upon the research and technical expertise of both the University and Atkins, ensuring that meaningful practical and evidence-based projects are taken forward by Masters students with academic and professional support, guidance and insight.
Prof Bassam said: “The commercial focus and understanding which Atkins is able to provide is an invaluable component of our relationship. We’re very proud to be at the forefront of research in the region’s engineering and construction sector and believe we can play an important role in our future cities.”
Since Atkins and BUiD began their relationship in March 2005, more than 50 Masters students have been awarded an MSc in Sustainable Design of the Built Environment. The university also recently launched a PhD in Architecture and Sustainable Built Environment, which will provide a spring board for more extensive joint research as the UAE gears up for the Expo 2020 and beyond.
Prof Abdullah Alshamsi Vice-Chancellor of the British University in Dubai, added: “We are very grateful to Atkins for extending their support to BUiD, both financially and through their sharing of knowledge. They have set an excellent example of how businesses and academia in the UAE can contribute together towards developing Dubai as a sustainable knowledge-based economy.”
