Undergraduate engineering degree programs at AUB receive prestigious ABET accreditation

Lebanon: Wednesday, August 11 - 2010 @ 15:05

ABET, Inc., is the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology; it consists of a federation of 30 professional and technical societies representing these fields. ABET has provided quality assurance for over 75 years and has accredited more than 2,900 programs in 600 US colleges and universities. AUB is the first university in Lebanon to receive ABET accreditation.

“ABET accreditation is assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students,” according to the ABET website.

ABET granted all of AUB’s engineering undergraduate degree programs—civil engineering, computer and communications engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering—high marks after a rigorous and meticulous process that involved meetings with faculty, students, and staff, and reviews of course curricula, exams, and assignments as well as inspections of engineering facilities. An ABET team visited AUB in November 2009, and at the end of July 2010, the University was notified of ABET’s accreditation decision.

“ABET accreditation is a true milestone for AUB, and the award, without weaknesses noted, is a stellar achievement,” said AUB President Peter Dorman. “Congratulations to AUB for this long overdue recognition. Credit goes to the hard work and efforts of the faculty, staff, and students of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FEA), and to all AUB, since FEA cannot function and fulfill its mission without the support of the rest of campus.”

“The benefits of getting ABET accreditation are many: It forces departments to improve their programs continuously…. So that they remain up-to-date and meet international standards,” said FEA Dean Ibrahim Hajj. Even though our students do not have problems getting jobs in companies and being admitted to top universities in the US and Europe, having accreditation will open more doors for them.”

Moreover, ABET accreditation will help AUB attract more international students to its programs, he added.
