The School of Engineering at AUD hosted the second edition of the Deep Foundations Institute Middle East Conference (DFIMEC) 2014 recently, one of the most sought after and leading technical conferences in the region in the field of foundation engineering.
The two-day conference provided an opportunity for the region’s geotechnical engineering practitioners and academicians to interface, exchange information and experience, and present the latest developments in the field of foundation design and construction. The conference had perfect timing, as Dubai is about to witness a new era of pioneer construction and challenges including foundation engineering.
Co-sponsored by the Deep Foundation Institute (DFI), the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority (TECOM), and AUD, and supported by the UAE Society of Engineers, this year’s conference built upon the success of DFIMEC 2012, also held at AUD, and provided a top-quality forum for discussing cutting-edge technologies and current developments in the field through case histories. The conference exhibit, running in parallel with the technical sessions, enabled companies to showcase their qualifications and project portfolios.
Dr. Alaa Ashmawy, Dean of the School of Engineering at AUD, expressed: “we were very excited to be hosting and organizing such an event, for the second time at AUD, giving professionals and academics a platform to share experiences all the while contributing the amount raised from the conference for AUD student scholarships.”
Commenting on the DFIMEC, Silvano Marchetti, Professor of Soil Mechanics at L’Aquila University in Italy, expressed that: “the conference was the right mix of academics, research and practitioners both from the point of view of the participants and from the point of view of the presentations. As a consequence of the vast activities presented here, we were able to have had a big variety of applications to one problem at the same time and all the engineers were really eager to select the best existing tools and methods. It was truly a big effort from the organizer as it was very well and meticulously put together.”
This year’s conference featured prominent keynote presentations by Prof. Silvano Marchetti, a key figure in geotechnical site characterization and in-situ testing; Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Katzenbach, a world-renowned expert on pile-raft foundations, Dr.ir. R.B.J. Brinkgreve, a pioneer in the field of finite element modeling of foundations; and Dr. Yoichi Watabe, a leading authority in the design and development of airports in Japan.
After the conference, attendees gathered for a site visit in Business Bay with a focus on high-rise tower foundations to culminate the discussions on the papers presented over the conference, which addressed the specifics in foundation engineering relative to the UAE environment and structure.
DFIMEC fits in with the aim of AUD to continually support and contribute to the economic and societal development of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and beyond.
The School of Engineering at AUD provides students with a unique opportunity to experience American-style engineering education in one of the fastest growing and most diverse metropolitan areas in the world. Strategically situated in the west suburbs of Dubai, the AUD campus adjoins Media City, Internet City and Dubai Marina, and is located within a mile from the Palm Jumeirah, The World Islands, and Jebel Ali Free Zone.
