Bahrain Financial Harbour, a world- class fully integrated master-planned waterfront development, switched off the towers’ lights for one hour yesterday, Saturday 29th March 2014, in support of Earth Hour, the world’s biggest and most engaging environmental awareness movement.

Spearheaded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in order to combat global warming, Earth Hour is an annual global event that encourages households and businesses to take a stand against climate change by turning off all of their non-essential lights and appliances for one hour on the last Saturday of Marchfrom 8.30pm to 9.30pm local time.

Earth Hour has gained monumental global support since the first ever Earth Hour in Australia in 2007and this year 157 countries took part in the event, which is a record for what has emerged as the world’s largest show of solidarity for environmental change.

Commenting on BFH’s participation, Dr. Omar Al Mardi, Managing Director, BFH said: “Bahrain Financial Harbour are pleased to join hands with the hundreds of thousands of businesses, governments and organizations around the world who have stepped forward to lead and commit to Earth Hour. At the BFH environmental sustainability is a foremost issue and we continue to take initiatives that reduce our environmental footprint. This global event, which raises awareness of Climate Change, underscores that commitment.”

Dr. Al Mardi added: “According to the World Meteorological Organization, much of the extreme weather that wreaked havoc in Asia, Europe and the Pacific region last year can be blamed on human-induced climate change however the far reaching effects of climate change could be even more devastating. Initiatives like Earth Hour are so important because they raise awareness of these issues while also empowering individuals and corporate with the knowledge that they have the power to make a difference.”

Concluding Dr. Al Mardi said “We will continue to passionately and committedly do our part to protect the environment in order to preserve a better future and create a more sustainable reality for the local, regional and Global community.”
