Bahrain Polytechnic in collaboration with SAP AG, a leading enterprise solution provider, hosted the “The Challenge of the Day, a Design Thinking Jam”, which took place at the campus on 2nd April, 2014.
The SAP project managers shared their expertise by facilitating the workshop as part of Bahrain Polytechnic’s academic alliance to enhance ICT students learning experience by providing resourceful training.
Raghda Zahran, MIS Program Manager stated: “The design thinking workshop promoted research skills and encouraged the development of creative thinking and problem solving amongst the students.
“The SAP project managers Ms. Sabrina Hard and Ms. Monika Ackermann really challenged the students critical thinking, this is the kind of challenge we like to put our students through here at Bahrain Polytechnic.”
The workshop is based on a problem-based learning methodology and encouraged the integration of real life research problems and authentic industry into the curriculum.
Working with Polytechnic tutors, students were asked to collect and analyze information, interview staff members, create prototypes and evaluate their ideas.
“One of the aims of this workshop is to enhance students’ engagement in learning and help them learn new creative ways of thinking” stated Dr. Nikos Gazepidis, Web Media Lecturer.
Students showed great interest in every activity. The project managers encouraged students to think ‘out of the box’ as they assisted them on possible ways of achieving their ideas for the given scenarios.
Mumen Suliman, Director of Training and Development at the SAP MENA, said: “Design Thinking is a mindset backed by a suite of tools that gives us a powerful new way to solve problems and unlock potential. It complements our existing approaches by focusing on understanding the human side of things — what our technology is, and what that technology means to its users.”
In line with the Bahrain Polytechnic research goal in developing an Applied Research culture to engage in solving industrial problems and enhance opportunities for innovation, the Research Committee and the Teaching and Learning Unit formed a research discussion group to foster the values and benefits of research by offering workshops similar to the Design Thinking Jam.
