TRA’s Director of Communications and Consumer Affairs, Mr. Basil Al Arrayed said, “To address the subject of online safety in a more creative manner and to actually read the pulse of the younger generation, TRA has now moved on to conduct its annual art competition based on this theme. Children from various age groups and backgrounds are invited to participate at any of the three categories of the competition and to depict and portray what Internet and Online Safety means to them.”
The advent of growing technology, have offered unprecedented access to information and communication to many people including children. Therefore safeguarding the interests of children online has become a prime concern not only for parents, but for teachers, legislators, and society as a whole.
TRA is aiming to create awareness of the risk associated with the use of the internet and how to mitigate this risk by creatively debating the issue of online safety with teachers and students. Students can submit up to three artworks in any form of; painting and drawing, graphics design and photography, or video and animation. The deadline for submitting artworks is on 31 March 2011.
TRA art competition is only one of many steps that TRA is taking to promote online safety, as a forerunner in the region, TRA has initiated an awareness campaign by initially organizing and hosting an international conference “Safesurf” during April 2010 and went a step further to conduct a study to investigate the real risk of the internet in the Kingdom. TRA has shared its findings and recommendations with the public on October 25th,2010 and can be found on TRA website.
