As diabetes mellitus rates in KSA are a major public health problem, with almost 25% of adults between the ages of 30-70 suffering from the condition, Saudi medical experts—including general practitioners, endocrinologist and pharmacists—met this week in three cities across KSA to share best practices in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diabetes.

The speaker tour, which took place in Jeddah and Khobar from May 3rd to May 5th, and will conclude in Riyadh by the end of May, is being chaired in each city by a leading Saudi endocrinologist and hosted by LifeScan, part of the Johnson and Johnson family of companies. As part of the speak tour, LifeScan through its OneTouch brand and latest blood glucose monitor available in Saudi, SelectSimple, addressed the role of frequent and consistent self-monitoring of blood glucose levels (SMBG) in successful diabetes management.

From initial diagnosis to long term treatment, diabetes management can be an overwhelming process for patients. Patients can struggle with meter usage, the newly diagnosed as well as long term sufferers. The OneTouch SelectSimple blood glucose monitor has no buttons and its innovative design allows patients to read blood glucose levels with accuracy; its audio visual alert system notifies patients in 5 seconds if their blood glucose reading is high or low.

The speaker tour is part of a wider range of initiatives organized by LifeScan—through its legal distributor in KSA, The Saudi Import Company—designed to support healthcare professionals in improving patient outcomes in KSA, helping them to avoid serious complications often associated with diabetes. Among patients with diabetes, 50% globally die of cardiovascular disease and sufferers are three times more likely to suffer from stroke than those who don’t suffer from diabetes.

With SMBG, diabetes patients can:
•Make more suitable day-to-day choices in terms of diet and physical activity;
•Recognize severe hypo or hyperglycemic episodes; and
•Have more informed conversations with their health care provider, allowing patients to receive more customized treatment recommendations.

Mohamed Adel Hosni, Head of Regulatory & Medical Affairs at LifeScan, said, “For people living with diabetes in KSA and their families, it’s vital they understand when their diabetes is well controlled; their quality of life will also improve. We know that the patient plays a key role in managing their diabetes. This speaker tour is important as it provides a platform for healthcare professionals to discuss and learn about adherence, the importance of regular blood glucose monitoring and the role of patient education in improving adherence and how they can support their patients achieve this.”

LifeScan further empowers the diabetes community in Saudi through their Lamasat program, which was established last year in KSA and designed to support not only the diabetes patient but their caregivers. As research has shown that the caregiver is playing an increasingly important role in diabetes management, the program provides family members with the right tools and knowledge to encourage regular blood glucose monitoring, to control the highs and lows of glucose levels, and to promote healthy eating and living. To learn more information on the Lamasat program and how to join, patients and their caregivers are urged to visit 4cprogramme.com.
