In line with His Majesty’s directives towards Road Safety and the emphasis given to lowering the death toll on Oman’s roads, Bank Sohar reinforced its commitment to spreading awareness on road safety by extending support for upcoming road safety awareness campaigns to be conducted by the Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA).
This latest donation falls on the back of the highly successful year-long joint road safety campaign between Bank Sohar and ORSA last year, titled ‘Be Safe…Be Responsible’.
The donation by Bank Sohar will help fund youth-focused safety awareness activities to be organized by ORSA, with the aim of highlighting responsible driving techniques for young drivers in the Sultanate. The donation cheque was handed to Ms. Shaima Al Lawati, CEO, Oman Road Safety Association, by Ms. Munira Abdulnabi Macki, DGM – Human Resources & Corporate Support, Bank Sohar, at the Bank’s Head Office in MBD.
Commenting on the need to contribute to road safety issues in the country, Ms. Munira Abdulnabi Macki, DGM of HR & Corporate Support, Bank Sohar said, “Since our inception, we have consistently made meaningful contributions towards the wellbeing of the local community at different levels and will continue to do so through our multi-faceted program of Corporate Social Responsibility activities. As part of this commitment, we firmly believe that raising general awareness of road safety, especially with our youth, will have a positive impact on our society, both mentally and financially. Such difference can be made possible through educating the general population on the importance of driving safely and how crucial it is to adhere to the rules of the road and we hope this donation will help drive this message home.”
“Accidents never have a singular cause; they are a combination of errors that eventually culminates in a mostly avoidable tragedy. This is why it is essential to instill an attitude of caution and alertness in the youth of our community at all times when driving, and provide them with a clear understanding of the hazards that are ever present on the road,” Ms. Munira Macki added.
Thanking Bank Sohar for its support Ms. Shaima Al Lawati, said, “We are grateful towards Bank Sohar for their continued support as well as their own efforts in spreading awareness on road safety. Education is our primary resource for achieving safer roads and with the participation of Oman’s youth we will be able to deliver these messages in an effective way to change the attitude and behavior of the community. This project will introduce Road Safety Educators and train them on road safety best practices. It is designed to transfer knowledge and empower the youth to make a difference and pass on what they learn from us. Our target this year is to reach 1200 youth in Oman and we will only be able to achieve this by giving these young minds the opportunity to be part of the change we want to see.”
Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA) is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit association registered with the Ministry of Social Development that has been established on 15 March 2010 to represent civil society’s voice, activities and action towards reducing road accidents and deaths in Oman. The association works within the remits of laws laid down by the Government to realistically reduce road accidents, fatalities, disabilities and injuries, and to minimize the socio-economic impact on the society.
In addition to ORSA, Bank Sohar has supported a broad range of organizations across the Sultanate in the current year, including Association of Early Intervention for Children with Disabilities, Creative Centre for Rehabilitation, Oman Association for the Disabled and Al Noor Association for the Blind.
Bank Sohar’s CSR initiatives have become an integral part of its operational strategy and as a result, it has received several accolades for its CSR efforts over the years, both regionally and internationally. In fact, the Bank plans to continue in its steadfast quest of philanthropy with many more donations and charitable events lined up for the current year.
