Speaking during a session on ‘Technology Leaders in Future Energy – Insights from the Innovators’, Vanacker noted that no person or company represented at the WFES could address all the issues that face society in the future on their own: “I see a real opportunity for industry to make a real difference as we face the challenges being thrown at society by the global megatrends that threaten our future,” he said, adding that “it will take a combined effort and a combination of new technologies to ensure global society and the planet continue to prosper in the future.”
Vanacker used the Masdar City initiative as an example of how combined technologies can come together to achieve inspirational results. “It is this combination that will ultimately see Abu Dhabi achieve its dream of building the world’s most eco-friendly city – Masdar,” he told delegates. “Using the combined efforts of Science, I have no doubt that Masdar City will become an icon for us all,” he added.
Bayer MaterialScience is committed to the Masdar City project through its Eco-Commercial Building Program. “We share the ambition and vision of Abu Dhabi in this project and look forward to contributing our technology in line with our mission of “Science For A Better Life,” said Vanacker.
Vanacker also referred to the Solar Impulse project as another example of how combined innovation can achieve great results. “When Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg’s wonderful project to fly around in the world in a solar-powered plane takes off in a couple of years time, it will comprise a vast array of new technologies and materials; not just from Bayer, but also from Solvay and other partners in this project. Once again, it is the combination of technologies that will deliver the big effect.”
“Bayer is known throughout the world as ‘the inventor company’ and I am proud of the fact that – as the need for more environmentally-friendly products is being demanded by society – our inventions are focused on delivering huge benefits.
“Be they lighter vehicles, better insulation incorporating carbon capture technology, alternative process technologies, better performing battery technology or better solar, wind and wave energy generation products, our inventions are all focused on benefitting the planet,” Vanacker concluded.
