The month-long World Cup concluded miles away in Brazil but there is no denying that the fever gripped one and all across the globe.
Oman was no different with football fans rooting for their favourite country or wearing the T-shirt of their favourite players – be it Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar.
Such is the craze for this beautiful game in this part of the world that Berger Paints decided to sponsor a football tournament during the Holy month of Ramadan that would put the local talent in the spotlight.
The tournament, that kicked-off under the auspices of Hamid Sulaiman Al Jabri, Chairman of the Referees Committee of Oman Football, will run until the end of this month.
Top footballers from 28 local clubs across Oman will battle it out against each other over 50 matches.
The teams will be divided into seven groups with each group comprising of four teams. All the matches will be held at the Rustaq Stadium after sunset. The complete stadium has been branded in an array of Berger Paints colours and the company has also ensured there will be free Wi-fi connectivity for viewers to send instant photographs and updates to their friends and family. Berger Paints t-shirts will also be given away as mementos to random viewers.
For the players, there is pride in taking their club to the top of the charts in addition to prize money, trophies and medals. The winners of the tournament would be richer by RO 400 and a trophy, while the runners-up will take home RO 250. Individual players who prove their mettle will be rewarded with medals and trophies. The sponsors will also honour the player that scores the maximum number of goals in the tournament, best goal-keeper of the tournament and best player in the final.
Berger Paints’ General Manager, P.K. Raj said, “As a global corporate citizen, we at Berger Paints are actively involved in the passion and future of the communities who have given us so much. We believe the best way to give back something to Oman is by investing in the youth. Ramadan football not only embodies the passion of Oman but also symbolises the spirit of the month.”
