Contributing to the UAE youth development support, Borouge, a provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, promoted polymer science amongst young science student aged 15 to 24 that visited the “National Think Science Fair” organised by the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development at Dubai World Trade Centre from 20-22 April 2014.

Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development, and officially opened by H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the three-day science fair has become an annual platform for the UAE talented youth and students where they interact with representatives from science-related industries.

“Borouge proudly participated at the Emirates Foundation’s ‘National Think Science Fair’ as part of its corporate social responsibility in the United Arab Emirates,” said Obaid Saeed Al Dhaheri, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Borouge. “The event is in line with our corporate mission ‘Value Creation through Innovation’ and complements our continuous endeavour to attract young Emiratis to the field of polymer science and the plastics industry.”

“Our employees at the stand had a unique opportunity to interact with talented Emirati youth and explain to them about polymers, how they are made and the valuable contribution they offer to society.”

Borouge provides innovative and sustainable plastics solutions for infrastructure (pipe systems, and power and communication cables), automotive and advanced packaging applications. The students were interested to learn more about how Borouge’s plastics solutions address global challenges such as climate change by reducing CO2 emissions when used in automotive parts, food protection when used as packaging materials, access to fresh water that is distributed through durable plastic pipes, healthcare in medical equipment and sustainable recycling waste management practices. Borouge provided posters at the exhibition that explain how plastics are made.

“Borouge aims to involve the UAE youth in its social responsibility and environmental stewardship activities such as the recent Waste Free Environment Day clean-up campaign which focused on addressing the challenge of plastics litter,” said Craig Halgreen, Vice President Corporate Sustainability. “Over 2,000 volunteers from Abu Dhabi, mostly students, participated in the clean-up and learned much about the importance of environment protection by reducing plastics litter and encouraging recycling of plastics after their intended use.”

In addition to visiting Borouge’s stand, students at the exhibition had the opportunity to network with companies from the oil and gas, technology, aviation, environment, and academia sectors presenting scientific hands-on activities aimed at improving the public’s knowledge, understanding and perception of science and technology as a field of study and career path. More than 550 students also competed in the ‘Think Science Competition” which provided various workshops focused on the elevating of students’ physics and chemistry skills as well as panel sessions to assist the competition’s entrants to upgrade their inventions and transform them into investment projects with a social value.

Borouge was established in 1998 as a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Austria based Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions. It is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation.
