: Sunday, November 05 - 2006 @ 15:59

Participants in the discussion, to be held on November 7, 2006, at Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Dubai, include Professor David Bellamy OBE, an academic botanist, ecologist and active environmental campaigner, Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of Dubai-based NGO Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), Wael Abu Adas – Vice President – Development, Damac Properties Co LLC and Mark Percival, Managing Director, Falcon Panel Products Ltd. – a UK-based supplier of wooden materials to the construction industry and hosts of the event.

“Falcon Panel Products is committed to sustainable growth; it is a company policy to source products from suppliers who themselves are members of recognised environmental schemes. What we hope to achieve through the round-table is to provide a platform for people in the construction industry and environmentalists to share their views, start a dialogue and work towards a common objective,” said Mr. Percival.

Mrs. Al Marashi said that it was her hope that the discussion would set the stage for a deeper dialogue between all sectors involved, leading to the establishment of best practices in the building industry. “The pace of growth in the UAE is astounding; at this point in time we are faced with the challenge of setting the foundation for sustainable development. I hope that open discussion will lead to a better understanding of the issues before us and then to the establishment of best standards and practices,” she said.

The discussion, which is open to consultants, architects, designers, contractors and developers, will begin at 12.30 pm with an introduction on the ‘Impact of the construction boom in the UAE on the local environment and recycled materials’ of the UAE by the EEG chairperson. Mr. Bellamy’s topic for discussion is ‘The crucially important role of recycled wood in the sustainable supply of timber to Dubai and the world’. Mr. Abu Adas will present the ‘Developers’ perspective on fine balance between development and environment’ in the emirates. Mr. Percival, whose company has supplied to major projects in the country, will speak on the ‘Role of Falcon Panel products and its suitability to the local environment’. Presentations will be followed by 20 minutes of discussion.
