UAE University students participate in FedEx Driving Skills Challenge

United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, April 02 - 2013 @ 09:30

The winning six safe drivers who demonstrated their driving skills while manoeuvring around a makeshift driving track were presented with trophies. Sara Y, Alya S and Rehab S, are from HCT Dubai Women’s College, and the male winners are Al Malek Ossama Issam El Halabi – American University in Dubai, Rameez Abdul Salam- BITS Pilani, and Zubair Ansan – Manipal University.

The winners were also appointed as ‘Road Safety Ambassadors’ to help create an awareness of the importance of safe driving skills.

“The FedEx Driving Skills Challenge is a perfect opportunity to share our company values with the community we live in. We are delighted to be a part of this campaign and we hope that the lessons learned through the programme continue to be followed by the 1,500 students who attended the sessions.” said Maher R. Hasbini, managing director, FedEx Express Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa Operations.

Organized by Ciel Marketing & Events and endorsed by Dubai Police and the Emirates Motor Sports Association, the FedEx Driving Skills Challenge conducted a series of lectures at each participating college. Videos, presentations and live demonstrations focused on driver awareness, seating position, seat belt and mobile phone usage while driving. Special emphasis was placed on the Safe Driving Triangle—confidence, awareness and anticipation—which is crucial for safe driving.

During the awards ceremony, Al Malek Ossama Issam El Halabi said, “While it was just a fun activity for me, I adopted many of the useful points demonstrated and discussed during the presentation at our university by the trainers. I made a conscious effort to use the techniques suggested and it improved my confidence to manoeuvre the car with more agility and without any penalties.”

The five universities which participated in the programme are Higher Colleges of Technology Dubai Women’s Campus, Higher Colleges of Technology Dubai Men’s Campus, BITS Pilani, American University in Dubai and Manipal University.
