The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy welcomed a special guest to its headquarters recently, when former Liverpool Football Club star Graeme Souness met with the Secretary General, Hassan Al Thawadi.

Mr Souness – who both captained and managed the Anfield club – took time out from his role as a football analyst with Doha-based broadcaster beIN SPORTS to discuss a wide-ranging number of football issues.

With the next three years a key phase in the delivery of stadia and infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, the informal meeting was the perfect chance for the Secretary General to hear the thoughts of someone who has played in three World Cups for the Scotland National Team.

A ferocious midfielder at the height of his career, Souness sealed his place in Liverpool’s history books after winning three European Cups, five league titles and four League Cups. After the meeting at Al Bidda Tower, Qatar’s Home of Football, the Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Hassan Al Thawadi, conceded that it had been fascinating to gain an insight into one of British football’s most iconic figures.

He said, “It was a pleasure to meet Graeme and hear some of the incredible experiences from his football career. It is always fascinating to speak to players and managers who have competed at the very highest level in football. These opportunities serve as valuable reminders of what is driving us towards delivering an amazing World Cup.”

After meeting the Secretary General for the first time, the former Liverpool star said, “I really enjoyed the chance to meet with Mr Al Thawadi and have the chance to talk about all aspects of football. I am fortunate to have the chance to visit and work in Qatar on a regular basis and I can see the passion for football in this country and the region. Everyone has their opinion but, having played in three World Cups myself, there is no doubt in my mind that Qatar will put on a great tournament in 2022.”

Mr Souness’ success with Liverpool was compounded with a Serie A title in Italy with Sampdoria before winning three league titles in the Scottish Premier League with Glasgow Rangers. He began his managerial career with Rangers before going on to enjoy spells with Liverpool, Galatasaray, Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.
