Whispering Windows make loud noise

United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, February 16 - 2005 @ 13:09

Whispering Windows is devised by Newlands Scientific, a spin off from Hull University and has based this technology on US Navy and submarine sonar devices. A pair of miniscule discs converts ordinary glass windows into on large Speaker System allowing you the ability to communicate with passers by.

To complement the communication with passers by, a suitable amplifier and an automatic gain control system has been designed allowing the volume generated by the window to remain at a fixed level above the ambient sound eliminating noise pollution. The system also includes a microwave switch with monitors the pedestrian traffic and only switches on the sound when someone actually steps in front of the of the display window.

The controlled output means passers-by can clearly hear the Whispering Windows, but retailers are not distracting traffic or the public.

The potential of this unique product benefits the many segments of market, especially in the electronics and FMCG stores. Now an electronic store can display their latest video systems inside the store and the sound of the same can be heard by passers by outside the store, every time they pass the display window. Retail outlets can relay their themes, music or “specials” through their shop windows. One can simply attach a set to a conference table and “Voila” the entire table turns into a speaker, you can attach them to the hull of your Boat, jump overboard and listen to a crystal clear rendition of Mozart or Britney Spears underwater, the same applies for your Sauna, Banks and high security areas can use them to communicate through bullet proof glass. The list of applications goes on.

Newlands Scientific managing director Brian Smith said: “Whispering Windows is a massive opportunity for the retail sector to introduce something new and exciting to its marketing strategy. Shoppers looking into a store window will not only be able to see the products but they will also enjoy listening to the programme as if they were sitting in their TV lounge at home, such is the quality of sound effect of our product.”

Rohit Ralli, the exclusive distributor in MENA and a long time resident of Dubai has always maintained his commercial connections with Dubai by providing the latest in technology from around the globe. Describing the potential of Whispering Window he said, “in today’s competitive retail world this is the edge you need to get that 40 – 50% increase in glance rate and subsequent influx in business. The Whispering Windows have produced dramatic results anywhere they have been tested and have lead to increase in store traffic,”.

Headline: Talking figures
A special research was conducted to see the positive impact of Whispering Windows in the market.

Multi-track cameras were installed in one window to record shoppers as they pass by while the Whispering Windows were on. The traffic flow was compared to the same period another day when the Whispering Windows were not in use.

Here’s the summary of the results:
• During the time the Whispering Windows were switched on, passers by were 32.5% higher than when it was not on.
• When weighted against the passers by, those who interacted – either glanced or stopped & looked – with the window display
increased by 56%.
• This weighted increase was higher for :
• Females (62% weighted)
• Ages 31-45 (76% weighted)
• There was no difference in terms of direction of approach to the window display.
• Those who glanced at the window whilst passing increased by 58% weighted.

Client comments:
• “You have no idea where the music is coming from.”
• “The store was stunned by the response.”
• “Overall the period that the Whispering Windows was in, we noticed a 40% uplift in sales across the whole of the audio and TV department increase.”
• “People passing in cars were not disturbed by the sound.”

“The retail sector has been looking for a way that allows people to hear as well as see products, so Whispering Windows is precisely what we’ve all been waiting for. “
