The Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FoCP) has launched its 2014 Zakat campaign that aims to raise Zakat funds in aid of Muslim cancer patients in UAE who are financially unable to afford treatment.

Last year where a total of 169 cancer patients benefited from the funds generated through the drive. The focus of the Zakat fund-raising campaign is to help people suffering from various types of cancer in the UAE, especially those who are unable to afford the expensive costs of treatment.

HE Ameera Binkaram, President of the Board of Trustees and a founding member of the Friends of Cancer Patients society (FoCP), said, “Zakat has been a tremendous source of hope for thousands of cancer patients in the UAE who need support to get through this life-changing illness. We are eternally grateful for the significant contributions received, and are appreciative of the concerned individuals and corporate houses for their generous donations to the Zakat campaign, allowing us to save more lives.”

According to the Fatwa issued by the Permanent Fatwa Committee in Sharjah, it is permissible to use Zakat funds to treat poor and needy patients, provided that they cannot afford treatment costs, including various kinds of treatment and provision of medical equipment and prosthetics. The collected funds will cover all major types of cancers including; Breast cancer, leukemia, colorectal cancer, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, Oropharyngeal Cancer, prostate and bladder cancer, and brain cancer.

Each case is individually reviewed and approved in accordance with the FoCP regulations and Zakat rules. Over the last 15 years, the FoCP has continuously delivered moral, financial and clinical support to 950 patients and families whose lives have been affected by cancer, along with promoting awareness about early detectable signs and symptoms.
