When Nadia Ahmed Ali, an employee in the banking sector (HSBC), had to choose a charity to which she would donate her $10,000 winners’ purse she had won at a talent competition organised by her employers, Pink Caravan was her obvious choice.
A compelling reason for offering her prize money to a cancer awareness initiative was that right after her marriage she was witness to her mother-in-law succumbing to cancer. “It’s been very difficult for us to live with the loss of one so dear to the family, and ever since, I’ve wanted to do my share to help enhance cancer awareness within the community,” Nadia said, glad about her contribution to a cause that became so dear to her after the untimely demise of her mother-in-law.
“By the time my mother-in-law was admitted to the hospital, doctors said it was too late to do much. We were overcome by the realization that she could have been saved had the cancer been diagnosed earlier.”
“It was not difficult to make up my mind on which charity would be the beneficiary of my $10,000 prize. I’ve seen first-hand the services that the Pink Caravan have been tirelessly rendering for the past three years. Besides the dissemination of much-needed information on breast cancer among the public, thousands of people have received free screenings. Before taking the final decision, I researched about the charity and found that many cancer patients have received financial as well as emotional support through the campaign.” Nadia said.
“Having such a visible and interactive breast cancer initiative such as Pink Caravan naturally makes it my first choice to give away this offering of $10,000 towards cancer awareness,” Ahmed, who had entered a talent competition as a vocalist, said.
HE Ameera Binkaram, President of the Board of Trustees and a founding member of the Friends of Cancer Patients charitable society (FoCP), said, “Over the years, Pink Caravan has been supported by various corporations for enhancing cancer awareness. But what’s more heartwarming is when individuals recognise the need for cancer awareness and come forward by wholeheartedly committing themselves to the cause.”
“Pink Caravan will continue to instill the importance of self-examination among women as a preemptive measure in keeping breast cancer in check.”
The next Pink Caravan ride, which will take place between 15-25 February, aims to screen another 5,000 patients. Till date, 22,877 people across UAE have received free screenings.
