As with the first event, a limited edition “Pink Pony Ricky Bag” was auctioned on the night, with 100% of the proceeds being donated to the FOCP. The bag, a rendition of Ralph Lauren’s signature Ricky Bag, was crafted in Italy from exquisite burnished calfskin leather that was hand-selected and specially tanned, and boasts pink drill lining and a removable pink belt designed especially for the Pink Pony Breast Cancer line, with a proprietor plate tag carrying the number 25 of 56 world-wide.
In addition to the proceeds from the auction, 10% of all Ralph Lauren Pink Pony products sold until April 2012 will be donated to FOCP. Pink Pony is the Ralph Lauren Corporation’s worldwide initiative in the fight against cancer, which aims to reduce disparities in cancer care in medically underserved communities.
Her Highness Sheikha Madiya, who joined the Pink Caravan’s inaugural journey in April, won the auction, purchasing the bag for the sum of AED50,000. She expressed her pleasure with the event, and stated that she is looking forward to the next chance to contribute to the campaign as part of her patronage.
H.E. Noura Al Noman, Director of HH Sheikha Jawaher’s office, said, “While we all love acquiring objects of beauty, it is great that from time to time we also do it for a good cause. For three decades, HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi had taught us to always link fashion and beauty with humanitarian work. I personally learned from her that the two were not mutually exclusive. And tonight I was delighted to see Ralph Lauren give so much through their Pink Pony line and the auction of their Limited Edition Pink Pony Ricky bag. I was also very proud to see the young royals of Emiratis, like Sheikha Medeya Al-Sharqi, supporting a campaign like Pink Caravan, and giving it their time and dedication.”
Said Ameera Bin Karam, President and Founding Member of Friends of Cancer Patients: “The FOCP has been fortunate to receive unconditional and unwavering royal support. In addition, the assistance from Ralph Lauren has been exceptional. This level of encouragement is what motivates us to continue this campaign in an effort to raise awareness and save lives.”
The Pink Caravan is an initiative launched by the Friends of Cancer Patients during 2011 to commemorate the occasion of their 10th anniversary celebrations. It is specifically designed to raise awareness of breast cancer and to encourage both women and men to perform self-examinations and go for regular medical checkups. The campaign will run annually until 2014, focusing on all areas across the UAE, including remote and outlying areas, as well as city suburbs. The funds raised during this awareness campaign will ensure the availability of the latest technology in the early screening and detection of breast cancer, making it accessible to all women in the UAE.
