Robin Sharma addresses ICAI members in Dubai

United Arab Emirates: Monday, February 27 - 2012 @ 14:40

This was one of the many inspirational insights Robin Sharma provided to 1150-plus members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Dubai and Abu Dhabi Chapters, during his talk on “Lead Without a Title: Winning Leadership Lessons to Build a Great Organisation”, at Dubai Men’s College at Dubai International Academic City.

Reminding the audience that the next 20 years would be the most challenging for businesses, he urged them to cultivate values and traits that would make them better human beings, not just better business persons. He called for innovation and thinking out of the box.

“The old model of leadership is obsolete. It is time for Leadership 2.0. But, as you migrate to the new model, you can expect massive disruption. You need to shift from Command and Control to Connect and Create. You don’t have to be a CEO to demonstrate leadership. The new model of leadership is about every single stakeholder showing leadership in the work they do. Every single person who works within a business, for example, owns the responsibility of showing leadership at their craft. Every single teammate is the CEO of their own small business unit called their job.”

The inspirational speaker shared his formula for overall success by giving tips like ‘Get fit like Madonna’, ‘join the 5 a.m. club’ (start your day at 5), don’t be owned by technology and leave people better than you found them.

Robin Sharma peppered his talk with his many inspirational one-liners such as: Leadership is what you do when no one is watching; what the victim calls genius, the leader calls practice; the discomfort of change is better than the heartbreak of complacency.

He called for using one’s time more productively by eliminating distractions like checking emails, surfing the Net, texting and other ills of modern technology. ‘Use technology to assist you in your work; don’t be a slave to technology. Use the best hours of the day doing things that you are passionate about; not checking emails.’

Among the guests attending the event were Sanjay Verma, Consul General of India and Arun Jain, First Secretary, Embassy of India.

In his welcome address, S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Dubai Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (DCAI), said: “This is a proud moment and a milestone for us. It is a dream come true to bring a speaker of the calibre of Robin Sharma to address ICAI members. We truly share Sharma’s philosophy of investing in one’s personality growth.”

Ramesh Krishnan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi chapter, commented: “Our members will certainly take home rich insights through this seminar. This event marks a turning point in ICAI, as we have decided to invite celebrity speakers as a regular annual feature.”

The high-profile ‘Invitation Only’ event was part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of DCAI.
