With the increase in services offered by key sectors including banking, government and healthcare, NAF provides an additional safeguard against unauthorised access to sensitive information such as bank account details and electronic health records. This is something businesses and governments in the GCC have been actively pursuing as debates about data security continue. In fact, just last month, the Bahrain eGovernment Authority (eGA) announced the commission of Singaporean company, CrimsonLogic, a leading provider of eGovernment solutions and services, to establish of the Bahrain NAF which will be the first of its kind in the region.

Traditional single-factor authentication requires only one authentication factor, usually the knowledge of a password, in order to gain access to a system. Stronger authentication requires at least two factors before access to the system is granted. This is commonly known as second factor authentication. Banks are common users of second-factor authentication methods which require an additional “second factor password” – in addition to User-ID and Password – which is generated on demand.
Assurity is expected to start rolling out its service to SPs in the second half of 2011. An NAF Advisory Council, comprising key senior representatives from Ministries of Information, Communication and the Arts, Home Affairs, Finance and Health, as well as the Monetary Authority of Singapore, has also been set up to provide strategic guidance for Assurity to align itself with the strong authentication developments across sectors.

Mr. Shaik Umar, IDA’s Centre Director for Middle East, said, “The need for secured online transactions is becoming all the more important as the number of services being offered over the internet has increased rapidly in recent years. IDA established Assurity to address the data security issues that many businesses and governments around the world are now trying to address as well.”

Lim Hup Seng, Executive Chairman, Assurity Trusted Solutions, said, “For Service Providers, Assurity offers customised services on the common NAF infrastructure, to maintain and enhance their unique and strategic advantage. For end-users, Assurity provides security and convenience for all their diverse online transactions with a single simple trusted solution.”
